About Dexter

When I teach people to play piano, I don't teach them the same copy-paste lesson that others use for their students. I formulate and teach lessons to my students based on the type of music that they love to listen to so that I'm not wasting their time and money by extending the amount of lessons to teach them. If my students don't understand a lesson, I work with them until they do even after the lesson is over. Some teachers might say that teaching like this only exposes them to one type of playstyle and is therefore "not a good way to teach", but at the end of the day everyone is different and learns differently. As long as the people I teach can understand, play the songs they love, and appreciate music as a whole I'm more than happy with that.

About me:

I didn't get into playing piano until I started to really fall in love with music about 5 years ago. I would always listen to my favorite songs and dream of being able to play them, especially when I saw covers of them on Youtube. I wanted to learn piano, but there was no way that a poor kid like me could afford a piano teacher for private lessons. From there, I taught myself to play the piano through videos, pre-recorded lessons, books, and pretty much anything else I could get my hands on. It was tough and required a lot of patience, but I'm confident in the skills I achieved through my willpower. I now teach a few students here and there, but I'm always ready to take more under my wing if they're ready to learn.

Being able to see the smile on people's faces when they start getting the hang of a song or understand a concept. There's just this really wholesome and happy moment when my students are able to learn and comrehend things that I teach. It makes me feel like I'm a good teacher. Although, I think this goes for teachers of any subject.

I started out by teaching my younger brother to play piano first. It was my second year of playing piano and I saw this as a test to see how far I'd come. I taught him what I had learned every week and he had learned what took me 2 years in 4 months. The joy that I felt when I saw what he could do with my teachings made me want to keep doing this to see if there was any potential I could find and tap into. While I haven't had enough students to replace a day job, I always enjoy the time I spend with them.

I'm a self-taught pianist of 5 years. I'm currently still a college student, but I academically tutored middle and high school students for half a year to make some extra cash so I'm fairly confident with helping others with things they don't understand.

About the lesson

When I get a new student, I try to get to know them first. I ask them about their tastes in music, the type of Youtube videos they watch, things they do in their off time, etc. The more I get to know about you, the better I can teach you and keep you interests aligned with your learning.

I mostly work with teens and middle schoolers, but I have taught a couple of older students. They usually have very little to no experience with music, but are always excited for the next lesson. It might sound a little judgemental, but I don't work with younger kids because they don't really know what they want. By that, I mean that they don't quite have a taste in music yet. I believe that a person should learn piano only when they really want to and not just because their parents want them to.

Look specifically for how a teacher interacts with their students. Do they talk to them at a person-to-person level or does it sound like a professor giving a 9am lecture? Depending on how you prefer to learn, this could be the deciding factor on how far you'll go. Also ask if they give out homework or some kind of guidance to work with after the lesson. There's no point in teaching a student if they don't know how to practice with what they learned. Another important thing to pay attention to is the way they sell themselves. Do they sound like an infomercial that's constantly throwing deals at you? Do they keep things short and with fine print or does it sound like they really took the time to write a convincing and strong description?

I was teaching my student a song that they could use to practice their chords with at the end of a lesson about inversions. They didn't really understand the uses of inversions and seemed confused at times. The song had a very simple progression and when I told them which chords and inversions to use, they finally understood when I told them that inversions made things easier when transitioning from chord to chord. To them, they finally understood what they were doing and expressed that they wanted to try a bunch of different things with a lot of enthusiasm and that made me very happy.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Are you willing to help yourself in the first place? Teachers will always try their best to meet the needs of their students, but they can only do so much if you don't act on their advice. Most importantly, don't be afraid to ask them questions. Remember that we're all still normal people and we don't always understand everything we're told. They are there to be asked questions.

I price my lessons at $15 per hour/lesson for a max of 2 days per week. I want to be an affordable and reliable piano teacher for people of all economical status. I also understand that some people may question my abilities since I've only played piano for a short period of time compared to other teachers so think of the price as testing the waters.
