About Meggan

I like to have a lot of fun with my students and parents! Music is fun! Learning the "language" of music is a rewarding experience and sometimes it even feels magical!

I've been playing piano since 1979, teaching part-time since 1989, and teaching full-time since 2006. I took 15 years of classical training and I have a master's degree.

One of the things that's so great about my work is teaching in the same publications that I learned on in the late 1970s and 1980s! Yes, the Bastien series hasn't changed much! It's still a great tool for teaching classical methodology.

I love working with clients of all ages. Music and piano instruction are my life-long passions!

When I was in high school, my Latin teacher expressed an interest in learning! She was my first student.

I am a classically trained pianist with 30 years of teaching experience ages 6 to 81, so far! I have a master's degree from George Mason University and I took 15 years of piano lessons. I've been playing the piano since 1979, 41 years!

About the lesson

The first thing I do is put the client at ease. Then I ask the client if they have any previous training. I begin to assess where they are in the classical methodology spectrum. Do they know Group 1 keys? Do they know the first two minor tonalities, the order of the sharps, etc. There are a number of ways an experienced teacher can accurately assess where a student should begin.

I have worked with students as young as 18 months old, teaching "music appreciation" and my eldest client, an 81-year-old Grandma!

It's very important to hire a classically trained pianist with teaching experience. Otherwise, the student will not have the accreditation that he/she will need and deserve.

I recently played the piano for my son's Chorus assembly. My son is in seventh grade and loves to sing. I love to help the Music teacher at his school and help out where I can.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about their goals for learning classical method. If the student is switching teachers, moved, etc., making a list of troublesome areas would be helpful to a new teacher.
