About Jill

My teaching style includes both ear training and learning to read music, as students will enjoy music more if they have both of these skills. I also like to use music that students request as well as traditional methods. I started lessons as a child and have played throughout my adult life. My goal is to help people enjoy the piano at any age or level of skill.

I particularly enjoy teaching adults, including senior citizens. The most enjoyable part of teaching for me is to see a student's understanding when they "get it," gaining a sense of accomplishment. My goal is to help students with basic skills in piano so that they can play the music they most enjoy.

I started my first "real" student as a college student, probably from a local ad, as it was long before the Internet!

I took piano lessons from age eight through high school, and I studied piano and organ at Wheaton College (Illinois). I have taught both children and adults.

About the lesson

1) While potential students are doing their research for an instructor, I send a brief explanation of how I teach and the invitation to talk in person--phone, video, text, or whatever is comfortable for them. There's no pressure to start lessons, just the exchange of information.

2) If a student decides to do lessons with me, we talk about what type of music they already enjoy and discuss what they may already know. I want my students to study what they want to learn.

Young children, moms of grade schoolers, and seniors--all ages.
