About Hugh

Learn to play the songs YOU love! My online curriculum is designed to get you playing beautiful songs right from day 1, even if you've never played the piano before. In addition to hundreds of lesson videos which you can access 24/7, you'll be able to get personalized help from me through ArtistWorks' Video Exchange learning system, anytime of day or night, anywhere around the world. From absolute beginners of all ages to the most advanced players, it has been a thrill to see how much progress all my students make, and more importantly: how much they fall in love with playing the piano!

I absolutely love instilling the joy of making music into people's lives! I especially love the "challenge" of helping folks who think they have no talent, and finding ways to help them unlock their amazing potential for personal creativity.

I've been teaching since I was a teenager. As an adult, when I discovered that reading music was a huge challenge even for working musicians, I developed "Clair de lune from Scratch", a YouTube series that taught Debussy's masterpiece one note at a time, using my expertise with digital sheet music and camera technologies. Thousands of students around the world discovered the joy of playing beautiful music through this series, and I've been fortunate to be able to extend my online digital teaching through ArtistWorks.

Director of Instrumental Accompaniment and Student Recitals for 19 years at The Curtis Institute of Music

Co-founder of AirTurn, a tech company that makes digital accessories for musicians, including the ground-breaking AirTurn hands-free wireless page turning pedal for digital sheet music

Popular Piano teacher at ArtistWorks online music school

Director of Institutional Solutions at Cunningham Piano Co.

About the lesson

I invite students to post an introductory video demonstrating their playing level and sharing their personal goals for the piano. I encourage students to dream big and aim for pieces that they love, not necessarily pieces that they think they're "good enough" to play!

I've worked with young and adult beginners, folks who have never played the piano before, as well as seasoned professionals of the highest level who needed some coaching in preparation for performances or auditions.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Most importantly, find a piece of music you are absolutely in love with, and make that your goal to learn. Love is the most powerful motivator to learn a new skill, and when I'm working with a student who loves a piece of music, we can overcome any learning challenges together.
