About Joel

Music, and the piano specifically, is a lifelong passion for me. I've been playing piano since I was 5 years old and continue to unlock new ways of making beautiful music from this wonderful instrument.

I've been teaching for over 15 years, in 3 different countries and to children and adults of all ages and abilities. I have taught privately, at music schools and prestigious conservatories, including Juilliard.

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Piano from Canada, a Master's Degree from the Guildhall School in London, UK, and a Doctoral Degree from the Juilliard School. I have taught university level students at SUNY Binghamton in upstate NY, and currently am artistic staff at the Manhattan School of Music.

Since I am classically trained, classical music is my specialty, but I'm open to pop and contemporary repertoire as well. You will be hard pressed to find a more experienced and highly-trained pianist!

I am able to teach in my own studio, teach online, or travel to your home provided it is reasonable distance. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Over the course of my degrees, I have taken a number of piano pedagogy courses designed to give resources and strategies for piano teaching. I've also taught at music academies such as the North London Performing Arts College, and have taught piano minor courses for 4 years at the Juilliard School. Since 2015, I've been hired as assistant piano faculty with Binghamton University (SUNY)

I will typically have a new student play 1 or 2 pieces for me they have already learned, in order to assess level and ability. I would ask why they want to take piano lessons, who their favorite composers and musicians are, and what goals they want to achieve in lessons. Warm-up excercises, stretches, posture and hand position analysis and new repertoire would follow

I've worked with small children just beginning piano and music reading; with teenagers who are entering music competitions and auditioning for college; with university students who are training to be professional pianists and students who are taking remedial piano to graduate on another instrument; and middle-aged and senior students who want to pick up piano lessons where they left off as a child. I have enjoyed working with every kind of student

Education, training, and former teachers are certainly important indicators of a strong background. Make sure to look at other things as well, including how many years of experience they have teaching. Try to find a video or audio recording of the teacher's own playing to see if you like how they sound. More than anything, it's important that the teacher is passionate about what they do, since that is what will translate most potently into your lessons with them. Keep in mind that some personality clashes or differences in expectation are expected, and that it's okay to find someone else in this case.

Recently an undergraduate student of mine performed in a year end recital that we had prepared together. After the performance, my student's father came up to me and told me that he hadn't truly believed his daughter could make it as a professional musician until he heard her in that concert. Knowing how much he cared about his daughter's ability to make a good living for herself, and how difficult it can be to do that as a working musician, I found his words a very moving tribute indeed.
