About SHUSHAN
I have high standards for myself and for my students. When my pupil has trouble with a piece of music or a few measures, I push them to practice it over and over until they learn it right. I encourage and support them and am happy to re-explain and re-demonstrate as many times as necessary, but do not tolerate them not trying to learn it right. While my high standards can be challenging, I am confident that repetition leads to learning, and I want my students to learn to play piano properly, so they can feel confident playing for themselves and maybe one day for others.
I have been teaching piano for over a decade and have had a diverse group of students. My youngest student was just three years old when he started taking lessons with me. On the other hand, I once have lessons to a 70-year-old grandparent who was fulfilling a life-long dream. Having spent many years teaching in Queens, NY, I am also accustomed to ethnic diversity amongst my students. While I am fluent in English, I am also happy to give lessons in Armenian or Russian.
Music is a language, it's a way of expressing oneself. Each person expresses something different even when they play the same piece of music. I love hearing the way a student interprets and re-invents each piece. How they choose what piece to learn and play. It tells me something about who they are, and gives me an opportunity for introspection, to ask, who am I?
I started the position of a music teacher at St. Illuminator's Armenian Day School in Woodside, New York. I simultaneously started the position of piano and music theory teacher at Clave de Sol music school in Jackson Heights, New York. I have been giving private piano lessons since then.
Graduate of a 7-year-long Music and Arts program in Armenia.
9+ years of experience in teaching beginner and intermediate students.

To begin, I would like to know where the student is at, and where they want to go. During the initial conversation, we discuss what type of pieces the student would like to learn to play, what is his/her current technique level, how much time they are able to dedicate to practicing, etc. And we move forward from there.
I have worked with students of various ages at beginner and intermediate levels.
