About Susan

Hello! I have been playing the piano and organ since I was 3.5 years old. I have been teaching piano since before collage at 16, and after collage, anotherwards, about 50 years. My Mom was a teacher and I knew I wanted to follow in her footsteps when I was very young. In my studio I offer lots of incentives, groups 4 times a year, and my motto is “I make piano fun!” I have lots of experience and know what makes a student click!

I started playing in church at a young age and continued doing that throughout my young teen life. I have been a part of competitions, attend yearly piano teacher conferences all over and keep up with current material that I use in my studio.

I love my job, I always have. I have never gotten burned out like many teachers do, I just keep going and enjoying every day, seeing lives that change because of music. I teach many children, teens, and adults. I love my adults too!

I have taught in the Baldwin music store since I was 16, in Miami, then Orlando, then in Atlanta when we first moved here for 6 months. I have been teaching in my home studio in Woodstock, GA fo 33 years and have kept between 45-50 students.

I started teaching right before I turned 16. I went to the homes in Miami, all over. After a rainy car accident I wasn’t allowed to do that anymore. The Baldwin store in Miami brought out a piano and an organ at my home in the back den for me to teach on. My Mom taught in the living room, and all of my students came to me at my house. We had a very nice atmosphere for all the students!

I went to college for one year and then starting to teach and never returned. I have many years of experience and sometimes that is more important than a piece of paper! I have ben teaching 50 years. I keep students motivated and offer incentives. I also have 16 adults!

After meeting the student and discussing where they are at, or if they are just starting, I explain what books I will use and why. Each person is individual and depending on the age, there are many different materials available to meet their needs.

I have taught little ones 3.5 years old and my oldest was 81.  Right now I have about 30 kids and 15 adults.  About 8 of my adults are between 65-75, the rest are younger. I taught adults when I was 16, have always had great relationships and have loved the adults I work with. Many teachers do not like to teach adults, my adults all practice and are faithful!

Make sure they have experience. If a teacher uses ONE book, beware of that. You should never have one book for the year and then advance to level 2. No! You need a few books, all are important. Just like school, a few subjects before you move to another grade, same with piano.

We participate in the Christmas Parade here in Woodstock. I have been in it for years. Many students are on the decorated float and we sing, I have walkers hand out candy, and I stand and toss stuffed animals to the kids watching the parade.  It’s a very fun time and we have wonderful memories.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What hours they are available? What is your schedule? Are you committed to try and practice when you can? Do you have a keyboard or a piano where you live?
