About Michael

My approach offers student-guided instruction; lessons are personally tailored to student interests. Within a variety of genres, my lessons can help you with technique, sight-reading, music literacy, phrasing, and much more!

As a recent graduate of Syracuse University with a B.M. in Music Education, I am a well-equipped music teacher dedicated to implementing modernized techniques in order to accommodate various learning styles.

Lessons are offered for Piano, Guitar, Bass, Clarinet, Audio Production, Music Theory, and Songwriting.

Music Teaching Experience:

- Music Director for On Broadway Performing Arts Training Program in Harlem, NY.

- Director and Founder of Syracuse University’s Music Mentoring Program, a funded educational program designed to teach piano, voice, guitar, and drums in a high-needs area.

- Touring musician for rock band Dr. Danny, based in New York City.

- Project manager for academic research in documenting/arranging Portuguese folk music for music education.

- Piano Teacher since 2015

- Guitar & Bass Teacher since 2017

- Clarinet Teacher since 2016

- Pianist for Lutheran Campus Ministry at Syracuse University

There is nothing more fulfilling than helping a student succeed. Especially with music, it is difficult to navigate learning on your own. By using proven educational techniques, I can help students get to places they never thought possible. This, alone, makes teaching music one of the most fulfilling professions on earth.

Music is a medium of expression unlike any other. Through music, we engage others in an emotional rollercoaster. By teaching music, I give students the ability to express themselves in ways they have never experienced before. Music is a beautiful thing - it is a gift that I am honored to give.

I started teaching from a very young age in High School. I taught piano to younger kids in my local community. Afterwards, I became a section leader of my High School marching band, where I led rehearsals and taught various woodwind instruments. Since then, I knew music teaching was my life-long passion.

I have a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Syracuse University and a Master of Arts in Music and Music Education from Columbia University.

I received New York Music Teaching Certification in 2020.

About the lesson

We will have a conversation so I can gather information on what you already know and what you are interested in learning. Using that collected data, I will design a curriculum that will effectively take you from what you know to what you need to learn. Additionally, I will gather information on your learning style so I can best accommodate you and the way you receive knowledge effectively.

I have experience working with students from all age groups, from Kindergarteners to senior citizens.

I work with all persons regardless of age, color, national origin, perceived ability/disability, race, religion, gender, or creed.

Make sure that the educator has previous teaching experience. Inexperienced and untrained teachers can have a significantly negative impact on factors such as technique. In some cases, it can take years to break incorrect habits caused by inadequate music instruction.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How do you best learn? Are you a visual learner? Perhaps you learn well by ear?

What content will encourage you to learn? Do you want to play pop? Maybe your heart lies with classical music? The learning occurs when the student is genuinely interested in the style of music.

What music experience have you had in the past? Are you used to reading rhythm in a certain way? Do you have no reading experience at all? Do you like to sing? Is there an instrument that you use to play?

He started off not knowing how to play the piano, and has rapidly advanced levels in a short period of time. Mr. Danny and Mr. Michael have been extremely professional and knowledgeable in their ability to teach and to connect with my son to advance his understanding of piano and music. Danny is a great tutor for anybody. I just started not too long ago and he’s already been a tremendous help in advancing my knowledge on the piano. Because of Danny I have a firm grasp on the major scale and minor scale as well as chord shapes and more. He’s also very good at helping you understand the terminology used in music. When it comes to mistakes on your end, there’s no need to be afraid of making them as Danny is patient and will not hesitate to help correct them; a bonus is that there is no hint of frustration in his tone whatsoever. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to learn or improve on their musical talent.
