About Dana

I taught piano and voice during my college years and began teaching again in 2012 as a means to create a Plan B income to pay for our children's college tuition, weddings, etc (we have 6 children between us). 😊

I was formally trained in piano for 10+ years by a teacher from the National Guild of Piano Teachers & I have been playing for 30+ years. I have been playing for choirs, congregations,and leading worship since I was 14 years old. Most recently serving as Worship and Youth Pastor in a local church. My husband and I now pastor a church in Montpelier. We live in Mechanicsville. I am a member of the National, state and local Music Teacher's Association.

About the lesson

After an initial phone conversation, I invite the student (and parents if applicable) to my studio. I get to know the student personally and find out what they enjoy and why they desire to learn piano.

If they already know how to play, I invite them to bring a piece of music to share.

It is a very casual experience. As you know, the relationship between the teacher and the student is crucially important to the success of the student. I desire for my students to feel they are in a safe environment to learn, create and just be themselves.

We proceed based on the student's goals, learning style and at their pace.

I've had the privilege of working with all different types of students.... From ages 3 to 83, different cultural backgrounds, different learning styles. I've also been privileged to work with students with special needs, such as Autism, Aspergers.

As I've mentioned, the student/teacher relationship is of utmost importance. In today's world, you can learn just about anything online. It is the mutual trust and partnership between the student and teacher that can, in my opinion, make or break the teaching process. It's important to make sure that students feel safe, heard and encouraged along their musical journey.

I deepl enjoy our Spring and Winter Recitals. We host them in the lobby of a local hospital in order to be a blessing to others and to give my students a broader experience of playing in front of people. It is always a special time!

Excellent! Dana is very dedicated to how she teaches and display excellence. Dana goes at the pace of the individual instead of where she wants to go as an instructor. Dana listens well to concerns and puts you at ease when learning something new. Dana is very patient and shows grace for herself and others. I am so glad I found her.
