About Law

I have been painting and showing in galleries for over 30 years. During this time, I have focused on continuing to expand my understanding of materials, technique, and the art of storytelling in one's work. I was raised within the landscape of Chester County, but maintain a contemporary and creative drive that allows for flexibility in style, subject, and medium. No matter which direction you would like to go with your artwork, I can help guide you.

Teaching has always been an extention of the conversation of art. I have been fortuate enough to have mentored many younger artist, who now are in successful careers in the arts and that is an amazing feeling. For most artists, there is always a need to supplement income between shows...teaching is the most logical way to produce that income.

I recieved my BFA from Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science. I also studied under Janet C. Reed of the Royal Academy of Art, London. I was an adjunct professor of drawing and painting at Bucknell University for 5 years and have been teaching privately for over 20 years.

About the lesson

My process consists of an initial assessment of current skill by reviewing work or projects the student has completed or worked on. We then determine what the goals of the lessons will be (e.g. "Complete a full still-life", "Be able to mix colors to support my painting", "Learn new techniques that I can apply to my work", etc.). These goals will provided the measurment for success in our sessions.

Once we define the project we want to tackle, then it grows organically from there. Each step is a learning moment, and I'll guide you through each phase. Ultimately, painting brings me immense joy, and I hope to convey that in our lessons, and have you share the same outlook on the creative process. Bottom line, let's have some fun with it.

I have had students ranging from 9-93 years old. I have worked with groups, individuals, and special demonstation events.

Progress is different for everyone so go into lessons with reasonable expectations. First and foremost, it should be fun and enjoyable for you. If you are a beginner, it will feel akward and difficult at first, as if your hands and brain aren't speaking to one another. After a few sessions and some focus, you will start to see progress...the excitement of seeing the results only propels you to want to work harder...it is infectious.

I recently attended a gallery talk at the Church Street Gallery in West Chester to hear Jeff Shaeler speak about his work. It is always facinating to hear about other artist and their process.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out

$125/hr is my current standard rate. This rate does not include materials. Based on the type of lessons you desire, I will send a materials list for you to purchase or gather prior to our sessions.
