About Rico

Rico Sisney is a composer, performer and teaching artist with over 15 years of teaching experiece. He has performed on stages from Shanghai to the Montreal Jazz Festival solo and with his two primary groups: Chicago-based Sidewalk Chalk and the Bay Area's House of Whales.

Rico's focus in teaching music is meeting folks where they are and using as much of their knowledge and experience as possible to get them closer to where they want to be. He is very much focused on laying a groundwork that students will continue building upon long after they have moved on from lessons with him.

He has been awarded a Superstar Teaching Artist Award from Columbia College Arts Partnerships, was chosen to represent Chicago at the Shanghai World Expo in 2010 as Emcee and Music Director, and has been invited to lead worskhops and masterclasses all over the country covering topics like collaboration, creativity, social justice in art and basic songwriting

I have always found teaching a wonderful way to cement my own knowledge. In highschool, I taught improv theatre and percussion at a summer camp, I taught theory lessons in school to supplement my job in the music department and shortly after graduating taught music production in after school programs with schools that had had arts education funding slashed.

I absolutely love teaching and feel that it is one of the most positive ways to imapct a community and continue to grow as an artist.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Music Composition from Columbia College and have spent much of the past 15 years teaching music production, lyric writing, songwriting, performance, and master classes while also recording and touring around the U.S and Canada. In 2010, I was awarded Superstar Teaching Artist by Columbia College Arts Partnership. That same year I was chosen to represent Chicago at the Shanghai World Expo as an emcee and musical director.

I like to say I learned backwards. I started by writing songs and producing by ear, but then I wanted to know why certain sounds worked better together than others, so I started reading as much theory as I could. From there, I started learning piano on an old casio keyboard, but I wanted to go deeper into my playing and theory so I pursued a degree in music.

Because I spent so much time teaching myself as well as learning more formally, I have developed a number of ways of looking at music creation and retain an endless curiosity about it.

About the lesson

It is really important to me to get to know the student, their goals, experience level and musical interests. As someone who studied hip-hop production as well as jazz and classical music, I recognize that there are often multiple ways to explain a similar concept and knowing someone's goals and taste in music can dictate something as basic as how I teach chord spellings and inversions.

I have worked primarily with highschool and college-age students although my career began working with middleschoolers. I have taught complete beginners and tutored music majors. I have also taught master classes to performers on different instruments than my own.

A lot of the calls I receive are related to songwriting, collaboration, and how and why to incorporate social justice themes into music. Since outside of music I primarily work on environmental and racial justice causes, I am always keen to explore these topics if students are willing and able.

I spent a good portion of my education trying to unlearn things I already knew and I don't recommend it. When I was studying classical music, I was unlearning some of the aesthetics and preferences I grew up with listening to hiphop and soul music,when I studied jazz, I was unlearning many of the rules I had internalized studying classical music. When I graduated and was primarily working on hip-hop, I spent a lot of time trying to re-learn all that I had unlearned.

Of course, it doesnt have to go this way. Music is fluid and theory generally follows practice, . Really take inventory of what you already know and I mean this in terms of music(formal and informal) and life experience. Particularly for songwriters and composers, the most valuable tool you have is your individual perspective. As more folks are gaining access to tools to educate themselves and music continues changing, the likelihood of teachers being unfamiliar with or unaware of newer styles of music and methods of learning also increases.

As important as it is for teachers to be able to seperate their biases and judgements from the material they present, it is equally important for students to recognize that not all teaching methodology is useful for their goals.

Once you know what you know, it's easier to be specific about what you need to know.

What do I hope to get out of this? Am I just trying to get more proficient on an instrument, learn more formal theory, learn about being a bandleader and arranger, develop more compositional tools and techniques, get more ears on my projects?
