The first time I meet a student, I like to get to know the individual, their goals and aspirations. Get to know their challenges as well as understand why they are challenges. Another thing I do is to inquire about the student's learning style, that is, how do they learn ( auditory, visual, tactile, logical learner, etc).
These assist to create a non judgemental, welcoming and condusive atmosphere for learning. It also provides a foundation for how to assist the student to be successful.
I have worked with students from diverse background. I have worked with mostly students in nursing school.
I would advise to find someone with a passion for what they do and teach. Also someone that does it with empathy
A recent event I am fond of is a time saw one of my students who is now a registered nurse recognize me and told me of how well is doing. She was one of my students that struggled in my pathophysiology class, but I never gave up on her and challenged her to bring out the best in her. This she did!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would advise the student to prioritize the challenges. Find out if they are having challenges because thay have not had the time to study the material fully, or it is a case that have studied it to the best of their abilty and yet it is still a challenge. After considering this, prepare specific questions they want clarification on. I encourage students to come prepared with a list of clear and specific questions. This ultimatley helps them to maximize the time.
