About Melodie

Starting as a nursing student myself, I was aware of the impact a teacher had on my learning. Good teachers were always inspiring and I soaked up plenty of knowledge from them; terrible teachers drained you of any form of learning or mastery of skill. It was at that point that I made a promise to myself that when I became a teacher, I would give my students the best possibilities to learn and do it in a way that encouraged them to ask questions (there's no such thing as a dumb question!), make mistakes and remember important content for the rest of their career. I am currently a teacher at Mount Mercy University and absolutely love my job but I have decided to branch out to students and help them on a 1:1 or 1:2 basis in addition. I also like to engage students based on their learning profile. Not everyone learns the same way so whether you are an auditory, visual or kinesthetic learner- I can adjust my tutoring methods to your needs to give you the best chance of being successful, and thus being the best nurse you can be!

I specialize in pathophysiology, pharmacology, nursing interventions and critical care. I've been a nurse since 2010, have worked on cardiac step down units as well as ICU and received my CCRN certification in 2013. 2016 I received my Masters in Nursing Education and am thinking about getting my PhD.

The growth in students and their successes as nurses are the driving forces of my passion. Teaching isn't just a career for me, it's something I take pride in. I want to make a positive difference in the lives of students who are training for one of the best careers you can have on this planet. I have seen things, I know things and now I want to pass that knowledge onto others so they can create their own incredible journeys throughout their nursing career!

After my first clinical group I taught, I instantly fell in love with teaching. I knew it was my calling and the rest is history!

I am a lecturer at Mount Mercy University and have taught there for 3 years. Have taught clinicals in the ICU for 6 years and have worked as a nurse for almost 10 years. A large majority of those years was in the ICU.

I generally start with a brief introductory set of questions to get to know how you learn best, areas you are struggling in school, what your goals are and what the student is looking for with my tutoring sessions.

All sorts of students. I have worked with multiple ethnicities, students where English is not their first language, and students who prefer to learn in various different ways.

Look for a teacher who openly admits they love to teach and is willing to go the extra mile. Usually, though, you will tell if they are a good fit for you within the first 30 min of meeting with them. Potentially even less than. If they don't fit your style or make you uncomfortable, look elsewhere asap.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Try to pinpoint what area you are weakest in and is forcing you to look for a tutor. Is it study habits? Looking at material in a different way for better memorization? Is it that you struggle on questions that are on nursing exams? Coming up with a list of your weakest areas will help the tutor know where they need to focus. This will give you the best bang for your buck.
