About Jay

My goal is to introduce students to a wide variety of musical cultures, always taking into account thier own many-layered identities and interests. In every lesson students should encounter meaningful reflections of themselves, as well as windows onto others. These personalized curricula will show students that they are already valued members of a musical community, and, through musical colaboration with family, teachers, and peers, they may actively grow and nurture their community.

I got my start in teaching all the way back in high school, as a couselor at chamber music summer camps.

Most recently I taught courses in 20th-century music aesthetics and ear training at the University of Washington School of Music.

I have a Master of Music in Composition from the University of Washington, and a Bachelor of Music in Composition and Theory from Boston University with a subconcentration in bassoon performance. My composition teachers at these schools included Joshua Fineberg, Huck Hodge, Joël-François Durand, Alex Mincek, and Michael Gandolfi.

At the University of Washington I taught undergraduate courses in ear training, theory, and 20th-century musical aesthetics.

I began instrumental studies on piano at age 6, picked up clarinet at 8, and bassoon at 12. I continued my bassoon training through college, studying with the principle bassoonist of the Boston Ballet and Rhode Island Symphony. I perform regularly as a chamber and sometimes orchestral musician. Much of my performance, like my composition, lies in the realm of experimental music. It often incorporates improvisation, noisiness, and electronics. As a clarinetist, I also have a passion for klezmer, something I inherited by playing in my family's klezmer band growing up.

About the lesson

In composition, lessons will be tailored to your skill level and interests. In lessons, students are always welcome to bring in whatever projects/goals fascinate them. They will simultaneously maintain a more guided track of study designed to expand their compositional toolkit and understanding 20th- and 21st-century aesthetics. Beginning students will engage with the following topics: music theory, including reading music, part writing and harmonization; ear-training, including how to transcribe a melody by ear and how to sight sing; improvisation on their instrument of choice. Once they have grasped these skills, more advanced students will expand their abilities through pastiche compositions. These pieces will explore techniques of 19th-century art song, serialism, process music, sound mass composition, aleatory and improvisation, instruction/text pieces, and the basics of electronic music (working in a digital audio workspace, sampling, MIDI, live digital signal processing). Often, I will assign relevant readings by composers or music critics to give historical context for each of these styles.

For clarinet or bassoon, beginning students will work with texts such as Rubank's elementary method for the clarinet, and Weissenborn's practical method and Milde Scale studies for bassoon. Beyond scales and exercise books, students will work on repertoire. Here, students can influence the direction of lessons. If a student has a particular piece or song they'd like to learn, I'm always happy to help them work toward that goal. At the middle and high school level I encourage students to audition for district and other youth wind ensembles and symphony orchestras, helping them prepare audition excerpts and reperoire.

I've worked with students of all ages in both group and private lessons, including elementary students, middle and high schoolers, college students, and adults.
