About Russell

I have been playing saxophone for 28 years, and hold a doctorate degree in concert saxophone performance. I am experienced in both performing and teaching the saxophone, and also in teaching music theory.
I tailor lessons to each student, recognizing that not all students learn the same. My teaching focuses on producing a good tone from the start, as well as proper playing technique. I also stress musicality/musicianship with my students, and constantly encourage them to stretch the boundaries of their abilities.

Doctorate Degree in saxophone performance - UCLA
Master's Degree in saxophone performance - CSU Sacramento
Bachelor's Degree in saxophone performance - UC Davis
I first began offering private saxophone instruction during the last year of my undergraduate studies after being recommended to a student by one of my professors.
I studied music, specifically concert saxophone performance, throughout college, earning the following music degrees: Bachelor of Arts (from UC Davis), Master of Music (From CSU Sacramento), and Doctor of Musical Arts (from UCLA).

I have worked with students of all ages and ability levels, from students first learning to read music, to intermediate saxophone students preparing for honor band auditions, to university-level saxophone students.
When looking for a music teacher, my advice is to find someone who has been formally trained on their instrument. It is also very important to find a teacher that the student is comfortable learning from. Personalities vary, and finding a teacher with a personality and teaching style that matches the learning style of the student is important.

Russell is awesome. On one hand, he is a highly accomplished saxophonist himself, having earned a PhD at UCLA in the subject. On the other hand, he is an incredibly patient, insightful, and good-humored teacher, breaking down my technique into hundreds of details and explaining to me how to make each one better, with encouragement along the way. My lesson with Russell is always a highlight of my week.
