About Thor S

Juilliard graduate, 30 years experience teaching kids and adults of all ages. Flexible hours. Skype available.

I began teaching and coaching during my third year at Juilliard.

I'm a Juilliard graduate, where I was a cello student of Leonard Rose and Channing Robbins. I've taught consistently throughout my 30-year career. I also began teaching the double bass in 2008 as one of my teachers, Channing Robbins, alos taught many of the most talented bassists at Juilliard.

About the lesson

I assess what level of experience and technique the student demonstrates, and I also assess the level of commitment they are willing to give to daily practice. My only requirement is that a student wants to learn. If the lessons are forced upon them by parents, etc, then I'm not interested. I begin with the basics: scales, etudes, and technical exercises. Then we investigate the solo repertoire best suited to their taste, and also work on orchestral literature with which they may be engaged. I also emphasize performance experience through regular student recitals.

I have worked with students as young as 3 and as old as 72. I enjoy collaborating with students of all ages and levels.

Look for a teacher who will support your specific learning goals, i.e. how many hours of practice you're willing to commit to per week, how much performance experience you're interested in pursuing.

I released my first solo cello CD a few years ago with harpist Nichole Luchs. It is a "best of the cello" recording, and I'm very proud of the quality of this CD.

Is cello an activity that will get priority over sports or other activities in your life? Starting cello or bass lesssons is a time commitment, and it requires careful consideration.
