About Ted

I am currently employed by the Rhodes School of Music in Larchmont, Los Angeles. I have extensive experience teaching elementary school general music from grades K-5. I taught for 4 years in the San Gabriel Unified School District, working at a Title 1 elementary school as a resident artist for an after school music program called the Music Immersion Experience. In addition to that position I have taught private lessons for 10 years and I also work as a freelance session musician and composer. I have experience teaching saxophone, clarinet, flute, percussion, improvisation, concert band and elementary school general music. My private students range from age 8 to adult and study saxophone, flute, and clarinet, and audio production. I have also led jazz combos for junior high, high school, and college aged students.

My aim is to help my students discover what is important about music for them, while giving them the tools to have a positive and informed musical experience. I work with students from a wide range of economic and cultural backgrounds, ages, and experience levels. I’m very passionate about the power of music to instill a sense of community and belonging. In implementing a mixture of notation, improvisation games, and ensemble performance I’ve developed age/grade level specific-curriculum for class sizes up to 30+ as well as for individual students. By providing a framework in which students can explore improvisation and creativity while also learning solid fundamentals of pitch, rhythm, and listening skills, I’ve endeavored to have a dynamic learning environment which is centered around experience.

I’m interested in helping students discover and explore music in a way that will serve them for the rest of their lives. I’m so fortunate to have had great teachers and colleagues who have made music an important and positive force in my life. Helping others develop this craft so that they can have music in their lives as well is my goal as a teacher.
