About Marcus

Hey, I'm Marcus. I graduated from a PPE degree at Lincoln College, Oxford in 2018 and have approaching 1000 hours' tutoring experience with a track record of improving students' grades. What students love most about my lessons is the clear explanations and interactive whiteboard where I draw out any diagrams or maths I'm explaining and share the notes as a .pdf afterwards - so you can keep learning after the lesson's ended. I regularly teach Degree level and all exam boards at A Level, as well as Degree level. For a lesson pack, I provide a results-based and structured programme of tutoring, outlining a schedule of lessons that are oriented to your syllabus and goals. I look forward to hearing from you!

Hey, I'm Marcus. Economics is one of the most unique and challenging options post-16 for students, and a rigorous university option. My teaching involves making things really simple on a shared whiteboard, breaking down diagrams/models/concepts into the most basic components and explaining them in everyday language. It's my belief that by getting a good, intuitive understanding of core concepts you will learn much faster than if you attempt to memorise diagrams or notation without fully understanding. Often in Economics, things are much simpler than they first appear once you get the underlying concepts. I teach Economics lessons in an engaging virtual classroom, taking care to draw all diagrams on a whiteboard and share the notes with you after every lesson. We will align on topics to be discussed beforehand and can do a mix of essay structuring and practice, past paper questions, as well as content teaching and revision.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

Before becoming a tutor, I helped at a series of summer schools while at university. I really enjoyed helping others build a genuine interest in my subjects (Economics and Philosophy) and develop intuitions for the core ideas.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach both Economics and Philosophy and aim to make the lessons as interactive as possible. There are surprising connections between the two which may not be immediately obvious: exploring the nature of value, thinking about trade-offs, and thinking in systematic and rigorous ways.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I’ve had a huge array of excellent teachers from GCSE through to university tutors. I think having teachers who believe in your potential and have a genuine excitement for the subject are really important.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think good tutors are great listeners, patient and encouraging.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

In early essays, particularly in philosophy, it can easy to overcomplicate ideas or to state things in more formal language than is necessary. I had an excellent piece of advice to “just do the basics competently” from a former tutor. If you can explain your ideas very simply and accurately, that’s usually all you have to do. But it’s not easy. If you have something original to say, that’s just a bonus.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Claims made as a brief assumption or footnote can turn out to be someone’s life’s work to study. Knowing when to balance breadth with depth is a challenge as you take your study to more advanced levels.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I really enjoy helping students develop confidence with their subject and seeing the improvement.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I think I’m hopefully a Superprof by tenure. I’ve been a member of this site for many years now!
