About Leah

I am a certified Latin and Greek tutor who draws on more than two decades of my own experience with Latin and Ancient Greek to help my students develop a fulfilling relationship with two of the most influential languages in the world. As a trained linguist, classicist, and language educator, I have the ability to design and implement a custom curriculum based on the needs and interests of each student. So whether you just need help with homework for an existing class or you’re looking to start from the very beginning, we’ll work together to make a plan that’s right for you!

I love Latin and Greek, so helping other people to love them as much as I do is like a dream come true. I find it incredibly rewarding to see someone who has been struggling with a concept finally understand it because of something I've said.

I began teaching as an English as a Second Language teacher when I was a college student who required a bit of extra income and knew a bit about second language acquisition. I kept teaching because I love helping people think.

In addition to having a bachelor's degree in linguistics, I have a subject matter certification in Latin and am currently a master's candidate in classics. I have taught Latin, Greek, and English as a Second Language at the high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels.

When I begin working with a new student, I first ask them how much experience they’ve had with the target language and I follow-up with questions that help me understand what that means for them. Two students may have both had a year of Latin, but if one studied it in high school and the other in college, the depth of knowledge each has (as well as the type of knowledge each has) is likely to be significantly different. It’s important for me to understand exactly what material the student already knows before anything else. I then ask the student questions that help me understand what they want to get out of their time with me. Someone who only wants to be able to translate more accurately for graduate school is going to require a different curriculum than someone who wants to speak Latin for pleasure. After I have a good idea of what the student wants to learn and how they want to learn it, I can then work with them to develop a detailed plan for our time together.

Throughought my career I have worked with students from nearly every age group and a very wide variety of linguistic and cultural backgrounds. I also have a great deal of experience tutoring students with special needs.

There aren't a lot of us, but there are enough that you can afford to be a bit picky. Don't feel like you have to settle for a tutor who hasn't been effective for you simply because you worry you won't be able to find another.

I recently attended a conference for language teachers that I found very impactful. It was gratifying to see so many people passionate about language education gathered in one place, sharing their best ideas in the interest of their students.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What specifically am I struggling with or what do I want to learn?

Why am I struggling? Is the problem the material or how it's being explained?

Why do I want to learn it?

How far along am I in my study of this subject?
