About Laura

I have been teaching riding lessons for over 15 years. Almost all of my students have gone on to purchase horses of their own and are confident, successful riders. My lessons are informal and tailored to the learning needs of my students. I use games to reinforce learning. My goal is that my students be truly riding (balance + leadership of the horse) after just a few lessons. After that we focus on skill development. I believe the relationship between horse and rider is essential to successful riding, so that every interaction be a pleasure for both.

I have a short riding trail I use as a fun test of skills.

I am a Certified Equestrian Director; a teach Natural Horsemanship, and I own a small farm.

I truly enjoy watching people learn. I love horses and believe there is something healing about just being around horses. Watching that transformation happen in others is a delight.

I lead a large 4-H club (not horses 😊) as well as several other groups: teaching children and adults is one of my passions.

I began teaching horsemanship lessons when we had other children want to come ride our horses. My horsemanship lessons turned into a riding facility and horse-boarding business. I am now retired from the horse business but continue to operate a small family farm. I still board a few horses from time to time, as well as my own.

I have a degree in science and have been teaching children and adults for over 35 years. I am a Livestock Advisor for three counties.
In 2001 I began studying Natural Horsemanship. I have completed the Parelli level 3 training. I am a Certified Equestrian Director through CHA (Certified Horesmanship Association).

My goal for my riding students is for them to become, first and foremost, confident horsemen and horsewomen. Horsemanship is far more than just tugging on the reins. Since most of my students go on to own their own horses, my lessons incorporate care for horses, learning how horses think, and developing both safe riders and safe horses.
Our first lesson is an assessment of skills and knowledge and establishing a foundation of basic understanding of the horse. Each subsequent lesson builds on the previous. We progress at the student's pace.

Most of my students have been children, ages 6-12. After that age they purchased their own horses and moved on to Pony Club, 4-H, and competitive jumping.
About 20% of my students have been adults, particularly riders who are recovering from a confidence-shaking riding experience or brand new riders who have always dreamed of having a horse.
Several of my adult and child riders have been persons with disabilities, particularly MS patients and children with autism and anger-management. Horses and horseback riding are very therapeutic.
