Secrets of Success: Experience, Creativity, and Empowerment
The secret of success begins with finding a teacher who is experienced, knowledgeable, creative, and empowers students. I have a reputation as a teacher who has all these qualities. I enjoy teaching students of all ages and background, and approach each student individually. My seriously motivated students have won state, national, and international competitions. Some of my students are retired doctors and lawyers who enjoy guitar for pleasure and personal fulfillment. Other students want to study classical, others have more varied musical tastes.
My experience as a teacher has taught me students learn best when they can build on their success. Beginning with doing one thing well, they can in time exponentially achieve remarkable success. My instruction includes the theory, interpretation, music history, improvisation, composition, and arranging.
My teaching method stands out in that I know how to empower students by making them the masters of their success. Beginning with skill development, they are encouraged to be observant, critical, and creative. For example, as they work on skill development playing a limited number of tones (fingerings) they are encouraged to observe their finger position, control of finger movement, and experiment in changing the order of the tones to create pleasing tunes of their own.
Later in their development, when they experience difficulty in playing a passage of music, they learn to break down the problem and devise a strategy (path) of small incremental steps toward success and mastery. This approach to learning is empowering as it is applicable to success in any field of study.
I enjoy helping my students discover the joy of music by being creative, curious, expressive, and industrious. Helping realize this kind of success is my greatest joy as their coach and mentor.

WHY I TEACH
First, I love teaching! I have worked with studetns of all ages: age 7 - 80+. No two students are alike. Each has different abilities and challenges. Helping guide them to personal success empowers them to be creative, expressive, and fully engaged in the activity of music making.
HOW I BEGAN TEACHING
I began teaching when I was 16. At 18, while attending the university, I taught at a local music store. After completing university degrees in music, I was hired as faculty at Fullerton College, Mt. SAC College, Claremont College, Long Beach College in CA. At the same time, I taught music at K-8, directed choirs, and was the music director for churches.
Later, when I moved to Portland, Oregon, I taught at K-8 schools, college courses for PCC Sylvania and Rock Creek Campus (where I became head of the music department for five years. Additionally, I was faculty at Cascade College, Marylhurst University, Pacific University, and George Fox University.
Decades of experience successfully helping students of all ages and backgrounds develop advanced technical and musical skills. Experience conducting music seminars at guitar festivals for advanced students in musicianship, interpretation, improvisation, arranging, and composing.
Education: Master's in Music Performance, Doctorate in Education
30 years of College Teaching Experience, Director of Guitar Studies at Marylhurst University, Pacific University, George Fox University, Portland Community College, K-12 Schools
Founder and President of CDZ Collegium Musica: a Music and Education NPO with a School of Music program, an International Concert Series, a Guitar Concert Series, and cultural programs.
Curriculum taught: Classical Guitar, Jazz guitar, Guitar ensemble, Music Theory, Ear Training, Music History, World Music, History of Rock and Jazz, Chamber Music, Choir Director.
Student Achievements: My students have won state, national, and international guitar competitions. Received scholarships: Jack Kent Cooke and Davidson Foundation. Students have received (partial and full) music scholarships at colleges and universities. Students have developed careers in performance and teaching. Some have authored music books, composed music for business and film, worked as studio musicians for record labels, and performed with orchestras. Developed skills as composers, arrangers, and recording artists.

I interview new students at no cost. I inquire about their background and the reason they decided to learn to play the guitar. Then I ask what kind of music do they like to listen to, what do aspire to learn to play on guitar.
For absolute beginners we begin with helping them acquire guitar skills, what I call the HOW TO step; that is: HOW TO (1) hold instrument, (2) position fingers, (3) develop control of the fingers on the fingerboard. There are simple improvisational pieces student can practice with recorded accompaniment. The goal is to help beginning students to develop the fundamental skills; such as: how position the hand correctly and develop independent control of finger movement. The improv activities help make this process enjoyable. Learning the note names, and learn to read music notation, chord charts, and tablature. Students are able to read and play music without looking at their hands!
For new more advanced students, I identify what has impeded their progress. In some cases, it may be their guitar skills (technique), sight-reading skills, and possibly understanding of scales and harmony to improvise, arrange music, and compose music (instrumental music and songwriting).
I have likely worked with thousands of students over the years. Students from all backgrounds, ages, attributes, and deficiencies. Students with "learning deficit" (autism, ADHD, Asperger's), as well as physical challenges: blind students, physical finger impairments. Some students applied the learning strategies for music studies to schoolwork and improved their academic skills. For other students of mine, music has helped them overcome emotional and psychological trauma.
What do they all have in common? Each one has to overcome failure to become successful. Teaching is more than presenting and explaining the material. A good teacher empowers the student to overcome failure through problem-solving strategies, creative practice application, and determined effort.
My success ratio is about 95%. My goal is to help students achieve their goals in music. Not all students will become professional musicians; rather, 99% pursuit of music is for deeply personal reasons: creative expression, emotional release, a therapuetic satisfaction that comes from the music that resonates with them.
