About James
I have studied guitar, double bass, piano, theory, bass guitar and composition for over 15 years and have performed all over the DC and Baltimore area in various genres and styles. I recieved my bachelors in music from the Peabody Conservatory, and I am a conductor with the Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra.
My teaching approach for insrumentalists: I like to emphasize good technique. This way the students can apply this at home and learn a lot on their own. I like to help students help themselves. I also like to use songs of the student's choice to learn with and I am open to any style of music. I can help you become anything from a lead guitarist to someone who just plays for fun. My influences are: -Pearl Jam -Red Hot Chili Peppers - Funk -Green Day -Edward Sharpe -Bruno Mars- -Simon and Garnfunkel James Taylor My guitar lessons take place in: The teacher's studio or the student's home Guitar Lessons with me take place in the following areas: Vienna Guitar Techniques: Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Fingerstyle, Vocal Accompaniment, Performance, Jamming Skills, Reading Music, Music Theory, Song Writing Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following: -have them play something for me -discuss what they want out of their guitar playing A guitar lesson with me might entail the following: -begin with warmups -listen to some good guitar centric music -jam a little ( if student is at that level) -student plays song they have been working on -go over the song, fix any obvious errors -work on techinque -assign/choose a song for the next week The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following: -willing to learn -loves music -Dedicated -friendly
I get to spread the joy of music - its as simple as that. Not only do I get to play music with my students, but I help them tap into their inner passion and create a new expressive outlet that they can integrate into their lives.
I have trained at The Peabody Conservatory as well as the Tanglewood Music Center. The majoirty of what I have learned on guitar and bass guitar comes from years of peroforming n bands and ensembles throughout the country.

-First we determine what the student wants out of the lesson. This is YOUR time. If you want to learn how to play your favorite songs- we pick one and we go for it. If you're someone who wants to learn how to improv, jam , or write your own songs - we get started on learning the foundation of music theory and start making music together from day one. Any combination of genres and interests is great! You get to decide your own curriculum and I help you execute it.
I have worked with students ages 6-50! Some of my sudnets have had disabilities , both learning and physical , and we have structured a curriculum that works with their strengths to help them learn the best. I have also worked with students who have been playing guitar for years and are just working on polishing their skills - any skill level is great!

Details
I generally charge $35 per lesson. I feel this reflects the years of experience and training that I bring to every lesson, as well as the benefit the studets will have from studying with me.
