About Kenneth
Hi, private guitar instruction is now available with Kenneth Harper at my home in Browns Valley, Vacaville. Beginner, intermediate and beyond. I'm a patient, caring instructor and do all I can to simplify your learning process and make it as fruitful and fun as possible.
A list of my qualifications include more than 50 years experience on the guitar, both acoustic and electric, 2 years of advanced harmony and music theory at Solano Community College and personal instruction in guitar with virtuoso "Jim Campilongo" for several years.
The styles covered include rock & roll, rockabilly, blues, folk, some jazz standards, ragtime, western swing and traditional country western. Basic music theory, notation, tablature as well as teaching "hot licks" by ear are included in my lesson plan. One of my goals is to teach improvisational skills through the understanding of chord structure and scales. Styles include flat picking, hybrid picking, finger-picking, Travis picking and dead thumb.
If you want to learn instrumental tunes or just want to accompany your voice with chords, I can help. Competitive rates. 1 free half hour introductory lesson when you mention this ad!

When I'm approached by a new student one of the first things I ask is how much experience they have. I not only teach beginners but I can also help students at an intermediate level and beyond get a better understanding of music and theory as well as playing techniques.

Phenomenal guitar player, luthier and human being. Whether guitar repair, guitar lessons, or just conversation, any and all interactions with Kenny are definitely worth my time. He's repaired and/or upgraded a few of my guitars, which I'm VERY happy with, given me private lessons, invaluable to be sure, and has spent a lot of time collectively just hanging out after lessons when time allows. Kenny is truly a talent in his trade and someone worth knowing professionally and personally.
Kenneth is an amazing guitarist and knowledgeable instructor. I not only consider him to be a fantastic instructor, but also a great friend. He truly puts his heart into teaching each person at their own pace and abilities. If you want to really learn the guitar, talk to Kenneth. You will not be sorry!
Fantastic teacher and guitar player. Great patience and love for music. Teaches foundation of music info as well as techniques.James W.
"Extremely knowledgeable teacher, he shares his experiences in a way that is very insightful! Thorough and patient....I would recommend Kenneth for any level of lessons."
December 24, 2016I decided to take guitar lessons when I retired, and had three different instructors before I met Kenneth Harper, I have been taking lessons from Ken for almost three years now and feel that he has helped me more than any of the others. Ken has the knowledge and skills to do a superb job. He not only shows/teaches you the chords but also teaches the theory you need to understand how things relate. Ken has always gone the extra mile to help me. Another benefit is that Ken is a great luthier and can help get your guitar sounding and feeling great. His prices for lessons and guitar work are very reasonable. I would recommend Kenneth to anyone wanting to learn how to play and understand guitar music. Ed S. Suisun City, Ca.
If you're like me and tired of trying to learn from CD's and books and need to take it to the next level, have I got the guy for you. I saw Ken's ad, made the call and glad that I did. A year later I'm doing things I would have never learned on my own. Ken's passionate about the guitar and wants you to enjoy it as much as he does. And not just the playing part but also understanding the theory behind it and he does it in a very enjoyable way (not like homework). He adjusts his lessons based on the type music you like and seems to be able to figure out the best teaching technique that works best for you. I'm convinced that if he didn't teach guitar he'd be a shrink. He's a talented musician and teacher and if you're serious about learning to play, you'll have fun doing it and you won't be disappointed.

I had been dabbling on guitar for awhile learning a few songs and licks on YouTube. I generally would learn the beginning of a song, get bored, and move along to another song and repeat. I needed to do something different. I found Ken’s advertisement and thought I would take a chance. I called Ken and we set up my first lesson. Right away I knew I had found the right guy to teach me guitar.
Ken has a very relaxed style and makes you feel comfortable. He provides me with feedback giving the right mix of praise and suggestions to improve. He also is a great guitar player in his own right. I enjoy listening to how he plays hoping I can learn more.
Ken prepares my lesson with my skill level in mind and teaches me the entire song from start to finish. I not only learn the chords, note counting, and rhythm but also the lead and how to improvise. No more jumping from song to song. We have learned songs that I never knew existed. Ken mixes in music theory with his lessons. I had a high school band level of music theory from a long time ago. Ken continues to give me little bites of theory that I try to retain and use along the way.
Ken played my guitar and immediately knew the action was too low. I had bought it used and knew very little about guitar set up and repair. I followed Ken’s suggestions and my guitar has never sounded better.
I think my favorite part of my lesson is when we jam together. One of us will play a chord progression and the other will jam on top of that. We swap back and forth and it is fun. I am not very good at it yet but hope to improve.
Overall I feel like I have learned a lot from Ken and my guitar playingSee more recommendations
