About Kara

Lessons are often tailored toward the unique needs of each individual student. Kara's approach to music provides an emphasis on a proper understanding of music theory, fundamental concepts of music, and proper musical technique. Her goal is to help you reach your personal goals in music and make this a fun experience that will add to your life and the lives of those around you. This is often achieved through some type of curriculum that she selects (after assessing your goals and ability level), a balance between aural and visual learning, and the exploration of various styles of music.

Currently working towards a graduate degree in Classical Guitar Performance, at the prestigious Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, Kara has over 8 years of teaching experience that she combines with her 12 years of performing experience as a professional musician. In addition to private guitar lessons; she has taught group/ensemble guitar, piano, ukulele, music theory, composition, audio production, and arranging lessons from the elementary through to the collegiate/professional level. Some of the styles that she can perform and teach include: classical, jazz, rock, blues, contemporary, R&B, and pop. Her student ages that she has taught range from six to above sixty and are all taught with an emphasis on a proper understanding of music theory, fundamental concepts of music, and proper musical technique.

I have been teaching for private lesson studios, online lesson studios, music camps, undergraduate music courses, and group/ensemble courses for over nine years. I have performed/been privately trained on piano since I was seven, guitar since I was ten, and my other emphasis's since I was fourteen. I currently possess an undergraduate degree in Commercial Music with an Audio Production minor and emphasis on Jazz/Classical Guitar performance. Currently, I am pursuing my graduate degree in classical guitar performance at the Frost Institute of Music at the University of Miami. I also currently teach at two lesson studios in Miami and two online lesson studios. Overall, every lesson studio I have taught at has given me nothing but positive feedback regarding my teaching capabilities. My only reason for discontinuing at those studios was due to needing to relocate geographically for my educational training.

About the lesson

I normally take the first lesson to get to know the student, fill out a questionnaire I have regarding their experience/goals/interests, and then we play through a few things so I can gauge their ability level/things to work on. I try to establish a comfortable atmosphere right away by letting the student get to know me and by also providing positive reinforcement to what I can see as strengths at their current level. I have yet to have a lesson with a student where they do not continue after the first lesson because they have all expressed feeling like we established a good relationship/expectations early on.
