About Thomas

I pride myself on teaching the individual. Since 2013, I have made sure to meet the specific needs of each of my students. I have taught students between the ages of 4 year olds to 60 year olds and of all skill levels. I strongly oppose rigid, cookie cutter approaches to teaching music. Lessons are about building skills and advancing your knowledge in order to further cultivate your love and passion for music. I have a Bachelor of music from the Crane School of Music, a Master's in Voice from the Mannes Conservatory in Manhattan and I'm currently pursing a Doctorate in Clasical voice from Stony Brook University. I have been gigging in rock bands as a singer and guitarist for many years and also have some experience singing Jazz.

Helping folks find their voice, or build their guitar skills, is one of the most gratifying things that I do in my life. Many adults that I have worked with have thought that they might be too old to pick up the guitar or learn how to sing. Many of them, through hard work and dedication, were able to accomplish so much more than they ever dreamt of. I seek to make music a permanent part of my student's life.

I started teaching in people's homes directly after graduating undergrad in 2013. I immediately realized that I had a natural ability for it and that I truly enjoyed the work. I decided from that point that I would would pursue this for the rest of my life.

About the lesson

On our first lesson we will discuss your experience with music and your specific needs and goals. From there I will build a lesson program that best meets those needs and goals. We will be playing/singing from day one!

I have worked with 5 year old beggingers, 25 year old aspiring opera singers, 60 year old rock and roll enthusiasts, high school students auditioning for music conservatories, professional singers recording albums, and many other different type of students. Most of my clientele are in High school or older.

No matter how good the teacher is at their instrument, make sure the teacher is interested in teaching you as an individual. Many teachers have one way of teaching all students, which simply doesn't work. Also, after a lesson or two, make sure you can connect with the teacher on some sort of personal level. If you wind up hating your teacher, you won't get the most out of the experience.

I recently worked with a lawyer who was working on recording an album. He never had voice lessons and was beginning to lose his voice from having to sing so much in the studio. I gave him some advice on how to take care of his voice, as well as some vocal exercises, and was able to watch him nail his session a couple of days later.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Indentify ALL of your musical experience. Even if you want guitar lessons, but you played flute in high school, that's somehting you should definitely mention.

When seeking out a new teacher, make sure they are able to teach you the genre you are most passionate about. If metal or hip hop is your thing but the teacher only teaches jazz, it will not be a good fit.
