typically I listen to the student to guage where they are on their musical journey, then i like to find out what the student wants to learn. Usually beginner students want to learn songs, and thats how i started out. Intermediate students want to know theory and scalses so that they can write there own music i can help with that also. Some students want to just bounce song ideas off of someone else that writes music.
I have worked with students from the age of 8 to middle aged men and women.
look for a teacher that listenes to you.
there are many styles of guitar and music, if your looking to learn a particular style.... find someone who knows how to play that style :)
may 26, 2019, while in Paris playing ouside of a cafe passerbys stop to listen... I introduced myself to the crowd, after a short conversation i was invited to play at a local jazz club and i met many friend whom i still keep in contact with..
Music opened that door.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out

He's creative! He can show chords, how they can be arranged, and how to sing melodies over them.
Derrick is very patient when teaching guitar lessons. As a beginner this was very important to me. He also kept it a fun experience and is very encouraging to students in finding their feel for music and their preferred genre. Highly recommend him for beginners and more advanced guitar players alike.
Amazing, fluid and super fun to learn from! I really loved learning the bluesy jazz scales, Derrick does so well. Highly recommend at least one session.
Excellent and attentive teacher. Great personality and knowledge of the material
