About Hugh

As a child, I struggled with the formal curriculums of music schooling. Like many others, I found textbooks and rigid repetitive exercises to be disheartening and divergent from what I enjoyed most about playing an instrument.

However, my love for listening to music and seeing concerts drew me back to the guitar time and time again, and I quickly began to discover the sheer joy in learning how to play the guitar. There are few hobbies more personally lucrative and enriching than making music, whether it be discovering a new chord or sharing a song with friends and family.

My experience with learning and teaching guitar is one of a sort of snowball effect: each new discovery, every day fiddling with the instrument is exponentially more rewarding. My principle in teaching how to play is the same one I stuck by when learning, which is following one's intuition or "heart". By that I mean, writing songs even as a beginner, challenging oneself to improvise, and most importantly, having fun!

I have played in multiple bands over the past decade, and helped numerous family members and friends begin on their path of making music. With the live music world at a full stop, I have decided to share my passion for playing and teaching guitar with whoever is interested.

I offer lessons to beginner and intermediate guitarists of all ages, and will specialize in helping you write your own music, and make sure you enjoy each step of the learning process! The most important part of learning guitar is not simply putting in the time, but enjoying the time you put in!

My foremost joy in the work is seeing a student grow and discover their love for playing music.

About the lesson

I begin with a discussion of the student's musical interests and experience with playing instruments. What's most important is having a gauge on both the skill level of the student and knowing where to begin.
