About Jennifer

I teach music theory, so you can learn to play anything without reading music! If you've heard a song before, you can play it with techniques that are different from reading music.

You'll learn notes, scales, chords, chord patterns, finger patterns, chord types, drum riffs and rolls, and how to put it all together!

I believe that this method helps motivate people to practice. When it's straight reading from sheet music, it might not be as motivating because you're limited to what's in front of you.

I enjoys watching students learn a new skill or to improve their skill in an alternative and creative way. Playing an instrument by ear can be a great skill addition to those who read sheet music.

Or it can be a separate method of playing for those who do not want to read music. Being able to answer questions and help students overcome any obstacle is very satisfying.

About the lesson

When working with new students, I find out what their goals, feelings, and expectations are. Do they enjoy an alternative learning method? Do they want to read music, or are they ready to learn a new method, which is playing by ear? Do they know how much of a benefit playing by ear is? Do they understand that they will not be reading music during our training?

Are they learning to play for pleasure? Are they practicing for a recital? How might they use their musical training? Having knowledge of this helps me help my students and choose the best teaching methods.

Does the teacher have what you want in mind? Are they flexible? Do they explain what they are teaching you and why they are teaching it? A student should always know the reasoning behind what they are doing, and how it will help enhance their goals.

A teacher should be sensitive, creative, and motivating so that the process of learning and growing is an enjoyable one.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students and families should ask themselves questions such as:

Do I have time to take lessons? Do I have time to practice when necessary? Is this something I can devote an hour a week for plus practice? Am I trying to squeeze lessons in to an already busy schedule? These are all things to consider.

Details

Lessons are $45 for 45 minutes and $60 for 60 minutes. I also offer discount packages, and you can find that information on my website, which is playbyearthis website. I offer a free sample lesson/meet and greet.
