About Laura
I offer remote and/or in-person, private lessons in guitar, ukulele, and voice; for beginners to moderate level students, ages 7 to adult. My specialty is classical but I also enjoy teaching jazz and pop music performance along with some theory all tailored to each individual students’ level and goals.
I’ve been incredibly honored to have been serving as a guide and teacher of music to my cherished students for the last several years and it pleases me deeply to watch them grow and progress before my eyes. Whether you're just starting out or looking to expand your skills, I would be delighted to help on your musical path.

My very good friend and multi-instrumentalist Sarah who is also a piano and voice teacher, was a fan of my work in Foxtails Brigade. We shared a stage together back in 2019 and became fast friends that night. She was a very seasoned teacher at that point and that night told me that she felt that I would make a great teacher as I seemed to have much musical knowledge to impart. At that time I did not feel confident in my ability to teach but she persuaded me to give a trial lesson to one of her young students who was looking to play guitar so I agreed to the lesson. This student had not played a note on guitar before our lesson and by the end of our lesson he was strumming a song and eager to learn more. I felt so gratified by his clear progress that I thought, "hey, actually maybe I can do this." From that point on I put the word out that I was available to teach and found a wonderful handful of students quite quickly. I developed a curriculum that has been proving to work and maintain growth and the experience has been incredibly rewarding ever since.
I studied classical guitar for 7 years with private teachers and minored in music at UC Santa Cruz with an emphasis on classical guitar. I have been playing professionally in bands for the last 15 years and have two active bands that I currently play in. Laura & Anton is my French-cafe / jazz duo project in which I play guitar, sing and write; and Foxtails Brigade is my art-rock band in which I play guitar, sing, and write. I worked as a full-time performing musician from 2009 until about 2019 when I started earning my living as both a music teacher and performing artist. I have found a great deal of joy in being a guide for my dear students and love seeing them grow and progress as musical artists.

I like to establish a solid base of communication with my students to begin with so I always start by introducing something I created called The Guitar Road Map. It's basically a series of little maps that highlight all the dotted frets of the guitar or ukulele and helps to familiarize students with the open string note names and all the fret note names. Once students have mastered the road map, we will have a common language for navigating the neck of the guitar. At the same time we are learning the road map, we will be working on a piece of music which will incorporate the road map as well as learning to read music, understanding rhythm, learning and utilizing various guitar plucking and strumming techniques and overall how to engage with the instrument while advancing your ability to be a performing musician. As we go through the journey of your relationship to the instrument we will incorporate theory and some improvisation which will deepen your understanding of how all these musical aspects connect and work together.

My son has been taking lessons with Laura for about 4 years now and my daughter for about 3 years. Both kids have grown so much as guitar players and Laura is wonderful to work with!
We really value her knowledge/skills as a musician, but more importantly, we appreciate how she tries to get to know our kids (both as people and musicians). She starts every lesson asking them how things are going and always sounds genuinely interested and excited in their reports. She also seems to provide great balance in her instruction - classical pieces, songs that the kids want to learn (e.g., my son learned Blackbird a couple years ago), scales, improv, etc.
My son is now in the jazz band at his middle school, and even though this is not her area of expertise, she's picking it up and trying to find ways to support him on his jazz journey. I think that's amazing!
Laura also pushes and challenges the kids in really great ways that help them grow as musicians. But she does so in gentle, age appropriate ways. In fact, when I asked both kids what they like about working with Laura, the first thing they both said was, "She's really nice."See more recommendations
