About Zachary

I love music, music theory, performing, teaching what I have learned, and above all seeking God in my music and music teaching. I have a background in classical as well as contemporary styles of singing and playing. I work with students to assess where they are and break down skills and concepts so that they can be clearly and fully understood for the greatest and freest application. Music is and should be alive.

Getting to see the inspiration and progress in students.

I got started when fellow musicians and band members asked me to teach them to sing because we wanted to have them sing back up harmony. I had much success with them and that lead to me doing it more, with others, and even with other instruments I play.

I studied at both the Juilliard Pre-College and Manhattan School of Music with a Vocal Performance major.

I have spent many years 1999-2015 in many advanced choirs of various sizes and studied and performed many works of various styles

I have led many pop rock bands, written much music in that style, as well as classical.

I have much experience in performing not only in choirs but as a classical vocal soloist, rock lead singer, self accompianied singer song writer, playing the lead role in many musical theater productions that also ranged from rock to classical in style, and also was the featured classical vocal soloist with Peter Nero and the Philly Pops Orchestra on several occasions.

About the lesson

I introduce myself. I ask them why they are wanting to learn music or whatever instrument they are coming to me for. I ask them what kind of music they like. I will ask if they have any prior experience in the field of study, and if they do I will ask them to show me, whether it be a song they have learned or scales, or chords, etc., nothing huge, just so I can really see where the student is starting from. Depending on what I see from there, I will take the lesson to a varying number of places. But I normally will tell them a little more about me, and my outlook on music and the instrument they are coming to me for. How I would like to approach things based on what I have mustered from observing them, their skill and psychology, and hearing how they have responded to me so far. All in a way that is encouraging and honest and straightforward.

Students of all types, with and without experiece. Young from 5 to older in their mid 40's.

Try to be clear about where you are, what you want, and where you would like to go, even if that means getting clarity that you currently don't know. This will greatly aid your ability to find and recognize a teacher who can meet you in that clarity and will help the teacher as well.
