About William

I'm a local guitarist who plays gigs, records my own music, and teaches students of all ages. I've been studying guitar and music in a serious capacity for 15 years under several prominent instructors in styles ranging from jazz to rock guitar as well as general music theory courses. Despite learning so much complex and difficult music, I also spend a lot of time writing and recording original songs on acoustic guitar and vocals. I spend most of my energy on music, but before that my formal educational background was in western philosophy which has had a very big impact on how I understand music and how it relates to people and to other skills. I specialize in teaching guitar in a way that is specific to the goals of my students. Together, we study music the student is passionate about and in the way they are passionate about it, and we work our way outward from familiar territory into a wider understanding of music. That is the secret to making sure all of the knowledge we collect is useful and not inert, because it is related to what we already understand! My goal is to facilitate my students growth into authentic, well rounded, and fulfilled musicians. I believe that learning to be that way as a musician helps very much towards learning to be those things as a person. Many of the skills we will learn such as planning, problem solving, and goal orientation aren't merely transferable elsewhere, they become integrated into our character. As well as direct instruction on the guitar, In my lessons my students also brush up on some music history related to their interests, dabble in percussion to develop a greater understanding of rhythm, learn to maintain their instruments, and think about their goals and feelings regarding music.

Two of my all time favorite things are music and learning. I'm also a people-person, and I get a lot of joy out of interacting with and helping other people. Teaching music is where my passions intersect with each other as well as with my personality.

I started teaching students when I was only 16 years old. I convinced a local guitar shop owner to let me use one of the rooms in his business, and I put up flyers around town. I only had a few students at the time, but it was a crash course in musical education that became a great foundation to build off of.

About the lesson

With new students we work together to figure out where they are so we can figure out where we're going and how to get there. This can depend on a lot of factors and it's unique to every student. During our first few lessons we usually listen to some of the music they like and learn a few simple things to practice so they can go home with an accomplishment and something to enjoy practicing between lessons. Some students have very specific goals in mind and are excited to work towards them, and other students haven't formulated any goals yet but are still very excited about the guitar. It all starts with figure out what my students enjoy about music, and I start showing them how to harness that enthusaism to grow as musicians.

I've worked with students ranging from 8 to teenagers, as well as adults. I've taught girls and boys and men and women. Often I work with parents of my younger students to gather insight as well as keep them updated with our progress. I've taught students to play both acoustic guitar and electric guitar and in many different styles. I've worked with students with very specific and niche musical interests as well as students who don't have a favorite music artist or style but know for sure that they like music and want to learn it.

Most teachers will have something unique to offer you. Musicianship can be just as unique as the person. I think back on some of my teachers and think "wow, that was a good one." and I hope I can make my students feel the same way about my instruction. If know another teacher who I feel is better suited to help my student than myself, I am always happy to put my students education first and offer recommendations.

As a beginner Will was so helpful with helping me perfect all of the errors I made while teaching myself. He is an incredibly talented guitar player and really knows his stuff. I was always nervous to learn music theory but he explained it so well and made it so easy to understand. I’m genuinely learning so much faster than when i “taught myself”. He doesn’t fluff any of his lessons, he gets right to it and makes the time worth it. Genuine guy, great guitar player, definitely am going to continue lessons with Will!

Details

My lessons start at $30 for a half hour and are $50 for each hour. Shorter lessons for younger students tends to maximise fun and minimize boredom, but when students develop a real excitement and capacity to learn they always benefit from hour long lessons.
