About Ben

My teaching approach: I am a passionate educator who enjoys guiding students in their exploration of music. I graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2012 with a Master of Music degree in Music Education, and Longwood University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education, PK-12 Instrumental Teaching Certification. I've been a teacher, a clinician, and a performer on multiple instruments since 2001. I am also an active professional performer, primarily on electric bass but also on guitar, clarinet, trombone, and drumset. My influences are: Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Tool, Steely Dan, Led Zeppelin, Phish, The Aristocrats, Adam Nitti, Bryan Beller My guitar lessons take place in: The teacher's studio or the student's home Guitar Lessons with me take place in the following areas: 25 mile radius of Milwaukee, WI Guitar Techniques: Rhythm guitar, Improvisation, Jamming Skills, Reading Music, Music Theory, Scales and Exercises, Song Writing, Recording and Production, Guidance In Equipment Selection Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following: I tend to show students chords or exercises that get them playing right away. In assessing playing ability, I look for evidence of rhythmic ability and fine motor skill control, especially in the left hand (or right hand, for lefty players). Once I have a baseline for where to start, I structure the lesson to maximize what I student already can do well while working on new concepts. A guitar lesson with me might entail the following: I meet students where they are, regardless of age and whether in individual or group settings, and establish a plan to get them where they need to be. The process is then made as challenging and yet fun as possible so that students enjoying exploring facets of themselves they would otherwise not know were there through the study and practice of music. Each student is different, and I cater to each student's individual needs. The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following: The ideal guitar student is one who is honest with themselves about what they want to get out of lessons, and sets high expectations for themselves. A teacher is a guide in the learning process, and when students are willing, there are no limits.
