About James

I've been playing vigorously for 16 years straight. I love guitar almost more than anything in this world. The potential it has, to do almost anything. A guitar can change lives, change nations, change the world. One day, I just felt a deep desire to teach, spread, and share the wonderful gift and ability of playing the guitar. It may seem like such a simple thing, but I assure you, it is much more than a simple instrument.

I have played guitar and drums for 16 years. Although I do not have a college degree relating to music, throughout my time in college I studied music on the side for 4 years. I studied music theory for 4 years, as well as ear training on how to identify notes, pitches, intervals, and chords strictly by ear. I am very knowledgable, very patient, and a great teacher. I have been casually giving guitar lessons for the past 3 years, but am now deciding to take it a bit more seriously.

About the lesson

With a new student, we will first and foremost introduce ourselves to each other, chat briefly and get to know the student, see what their current abilities are, and then take it from there. After evaluating the student during the initial lesson, I will design a lesson plan for the following weeks based off the students abilities, but more importantly their goals with the guitar. I would like to teach things in a certain order, but if there is something that a student would really like to learn, I can design a lesson plan for the particular thing they are interested in. But otherwise, I will have the student go through multiple fun and challenging exercises to improve basic things such as picking technique, how the guitar is held, how to properly fret notes with your fretting hand, etc. Once the basics are down, then the lessons will start heading in a different direction.

I have worked with all types of people: 3 year old children, 70 year old grandfathers that wanted to start playing, people that came to me and played circles around me which ultimately led to us agreeing that they had no purpose being there. So just about everyone.

Stay away from big promises and marketing tactics. Find someone who is genuine, down to earth, and wants to teach people guitar strictly for the love of music, not because of how much money they can make. Find a teacher that you could see yourself hanging out with outside of lessons, someone who is just a nice, genuine person.
