I like to meet every student where they are. It's important that in addition to learning instrument specific techniques and music knowledge, a student has to opportunity to learn their favorite songs. Looking back, my original teacher did a great job of slipping music theory into my great desire to learn all the songs I could by The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and the like. I try to do the same. I encourage note-reading, but do not require it.
As young as 5 years old, and as old as 80. Absolute beginner to advanced.
Find a teacher who is, of course, skilled in what you want to learn, but also look for someone who resonates with you personally.
