First and foremost, I will need the student to be very clear on what their goals are. Maybe it is to learn their favorite songs, increase their musical knowledge, to read music, or all of the above. A brief evaluation on the first lesson will determine the level of playing ability and knowledge of music. After that, we will then proceed by taking small steps towards the goals set, so as to give the student time to master the basics necessary to achieve what the student wants to achieve.
I've had students from many different ages and diverse backgrounds. The youngest student I ever taught was 5 and the oldest was 65. I've taught people who were already recording in the studio, playing live in bands, and as a solo act. But like other instructors, it's mostly beginners that you sign up. Three of my students have gone on to become successful in the music business.
Remember that just because someone is a great guitarist, does not automatically make them a great guitar teacher. Also, it is an advantage to take lessons from a guitar teacher who is known for the style of music that interests you the most. However, if you are new to the instrument, and or new to music, then practically any teacher with impressive credentials and teaching experience will get you on your way.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1) Which type of guitar do I usually practice on? The electric, acoustic, or nylon string classical?
2) What style of music am I most inspired by?
3) How do I hope to benefit from formal guitar lessons?

Perfect! There are many skills that a great musician possesses: agility, pitch identification, memorization, etc. John Ezell is a master educator. His ability to diagnose posture and weak musician skills is a huge benefit to experienced players who are having problems achieving speed, accuracy, or fatigue problems. If you are a new musician, you will avoid developing bad habits and improve quicker. John Ezell assesses skills and knowledge and progress from one lesson to the next and creates custom lessons targeted specifically for you, to improve your playing weaknesses. John also emphasizes a well-rounded knowledge of the guitar, including theory, ear training, the art of soloing, and special topics. At any level, John can help you become a better musician. However, you get what you give. The more dedication to practice and study, the better player you will become.

I really enjoyed learning how to read, write and listen to music. He taught me how to come up with my own style and play with confidence. If you’re looking for a teacher who truly cares for your career, go with John Ezell
Took lessons from John for a few years. Always had a great time at lessons. John has a great knowledge of music theory and will incorporate it when learning songs. To me that keeps learning and lessons interesting. You get the best of learning the song you want and the theory. Keep on rocking.
I’m a former student of John. Helping me establish a fundamental understanding of how to approach learning the guitar ,and applying the lesson continues to be relevant throughout my professional career. John helped me simplify and understand theory, and how to apply it. His technique to learn every note on the fretboard quickly and easily is a tool I use daily and is one of the most valuable skills I’ve learned. This teaching style is challenging, collaborative and relative. Patient and persistence sets this teaching apart from the run of the mill “here, do what I do.” Hands down, best musical lessons I’ve ever had.
Great instructor and knowledge.
John is a great teacher of many music genres including rock, blues, classical and beyond. He is very knowledgeable of music theory and encourages all students to excel in their guitar playing abilities.
