About Emily

I have been teaching privately and in small group classes for over 5 years. I teach classical violin and voice, fiddle, and theatre audition prep at all levels, and beginning guitar. I love being creative with my teaching, and finding new, fun ways to help students fall in love with their instrument! My website is emilyslomovits.com. Hope to hear from you!

I started teaching violin and voice at a summer camp in Manchester, Michigan, and then began teaching privately about 2 years later.

I studied classical violin for 15 years, and jazz and Appalachian fiddle styles for 6. I studied classical and musical theatre voice technique for 10 years, and jazz and folk for nearly as long. My degree is partially in musical theatre performance. I've been teaching for over 5 years.

About the lesson

I like to find out first what their interests and goals are. Once I know their comfort level with their instrument and with performing, the kind of music they want to learn, and any specific goals they want to reach, I can tailor a lesson plan to their specific needs.

I've worked with students at the very beginnings of their relationship with an instrument, and students who are professionals wanting to hone a specific aspect of their talent. I've worked with students as young as 4, and students as old as 75! All are welcome! I love the philosophy of meeting people wherever they are in their relationship to music.

I would advise really thinking about the way you learn best. Do you learn in a relaxed, slow-paced environment, or do you hunger for challenges and a faster pace? Are you somewhere in between? Are you an auditory learner, a visual learner, or something else?Finding someone who can impart the knowledge in a way you can understand and enjoy it is key.

Since I only recently moved to Chicago from Michigan, I haven't set up a music or theatre teaching gig for myself, but I am an after-care leader at the German International School in Ravenswood. A few weeks ago, I was chatting with a young student, and she asked me what 80+80 was. When I asked her, well, what's 8+8? and told her to add a 0, her small mind was blown! That I could ever help anyone with math was shocking to me, so this was a fun little event for me!

Details

I typically charge $20 for a 30 minute lesson, $25 for a 45 minute lesson, and $30 for an hour. However, I am always happy to work with people who aren't able to make that work.
