About Hazel blumberg
I love teaching German, which is one of the most expressive languages in the world. It is also fast becoming the most important language in Europe for business and politics.
I started learning German in high school and was an exchange student to Dortmund, Germany in the summer after my junior year. I hold a BA in German (Colgate University, honors in German, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) and an MA in German Language and Literature (Indiana University). During undergrad school, I spent a year studying in Vienna, Austria. I finished my MA at the University of Hamburg, Germany. I've worked as the head teacher for a group of Indiana high school students in Krefeld, Germany; taught German in German to foreign students at the Study College for Foreign Students of the University of Hamburg; was employed in the kitchen goods department of a large electrical goods store in Hamburg (try saying "Dunstabzugshaubehängeschränke" five times fast); worked as a secretary in an export/import firm in Hamburg; was an assistant to a dentist in Hamburg. I've lived in Germany for many years.
I also earned a JD from Indiana University. After my first year of law school, I spent the summer as a law clerk for the Army Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps in Bremerhaven, Germany. The most interesting part of my clerkship was interpreting at Article 13 hearings, which mainly dealt with drugs, theft, or rape. You can imagine the kinds of vocabulary I learned--in addition to legal vocabulary that I barely knew in English!
Whether you want to learn German from the ground up (yes, I do love grammar), or whether you want to learn enough German to help you get around in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, or Liechtenstein, I'm here to help.
In my senior year at Colgate University, a group of parents whose children attended the Hamilton, NY, elementary school decided that they wanted their children to learn German. German wasn't offered in the school or in the local high school. The parents contacted Colgate's German Department. My lead professor, Hans-Jürgen Meyer-Wendt, recommended me. This was a volunteer position, and I taught a 45-minute class three times per week to eighth graders. The students and I had a wonderful time.

First it's necessary to find out at what point in learning German the student is. Has he or she studied German before, and if so, how long ago? Has he or she had any contact with the German language at all (a relative or friend who speaks German, for example)? Or is he or she completely new to German?
Next, I want to know why the student wishes to learn German. If it's curiosity about the language itself and a desire to achieve fluency, then we'll go in one direction. If he or she is going to be spending time in Germany on vacation, then we move in another direction. If he or she has found an English-speaking job in Germany but wants to learn to fit in with German (or Austrian or. . . .) culture, then we move in yet another direction.
Basically, I determine where the student is regarding his or her language knowledge and what his or her needs are. And then we work from there. I tailor my approach to what the student wants and needs. One size doesn't fit all.
Eighth graders, high school students (grades 9-12), college students (years 1-4), older returning students, private instruction of college students and people interested in German, tutoring of high school and college students.
