About Jana

My name is Jana and I was born and raised in Germany. I went to High school in Germany and completed the german "Abitur" as well as a bachelor degree in hospitality management. I came to the US about 12 years ago and worked since in the corporate world as an expert supporting a team of about 40 associates with operational training. My teaching experience is primarily with adults but I also tutored my 11 year old nephew who lives in Germany in the english language.

I enjoy working with people and teaching the german language as it is dear to my heart. I am able to adapt to different learning styles and focus on the identifying the best style for the client I am working with. Since I grew up around Berlin, my german is nearly accent free, called "Hochdeutsch".

Through my employment I learned teaching skills as the operational trainer for a team of about 40 associates including associates in the Philipines for the past 5 years. I am familiar with language barriers and how to use different approaches to teach and confirm understanding

German is my native language that I learned growing up in Germany. My grammar and articulation skills have been developed in High School as well as in College in Germany. I have trained adults in my line of work for the past 5 years. I also tutored my nephew who lives in Germany in learning the english language

About the lesson

First, I like to assess the prior knowledge of the language and identify the learning style of the client. Based on that I develop a learning plan suited for the specific client.

I primarily worked with adults through my employment but have tutored my nephew in Germany who is 11 years old. I am very patient and love children, so I am not oposed to teaching children the German language

Make sure that your teacher is able to pronounce the german language correctly. There are a lot of sounds and letter combinations in german that require you to position your tongue and shape your mouth entirely differently than you would use it for the english language. Practicing these differences is vital to correct pronounciation. Other than that, I would suggest a german native or someone who spent considerable time in Germany and is familiar with the grammar and articulation. Most of all, you have to like your tutor and believe in his or her ability to motivate you.

I have mentored a co-worker through her college degree, helping her with assignments and checked her work. She recently graduated with her bachelor degree and I am extremely proud of her.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What do I want to get out of the tutoring lessons? Define the scope. Do I only need help for some assignments/basics or do I want the tutor to teach me the language entirely?

What is my learning style? If you already figured out how you learn best, it is more efficient for the tutor to develop a learning plan.

If you are looking for a tutor for your child, ask yourself, how motivated is your child? How much resistance to the teachings will the child display as this may affect the results.
