About Pamela

I am a college professor and I have been tutoring since 2003. I have worked with numerous universities, Wyzant, Berlitz, Inc. and Club Z Tutoring. I graduated with my doctoral degree in 2010.

I use a method called "chunking" to help students reach their goals. It involves the breakdown of information into smaller pieces so it can be acquired.

I love teaching because it gives me the opportunity to pass on my passion for languages and in a broader sense for the humanities. I write for a general audience at pamelashuggi.com.

I hold a PhD from Johns Hopkins University in Spanish Literature. One third of my graduate work was in the French section, including a comprehensive exam and a grant to attend The Institute of French Cultural Studies at Dartmouth College.

I have lived in Spain and traveled to France.

About the lesson

I start by asking students what their goals are for tutoring. Then I ask what their previous experience is with the language they want to study and I engage them in conversation to see if there are gaps in their knowledge. If there are, I work with them to fill in these gaps while we explore new topics of conversation. I like to establish if the student will have time for homework or if they are just seeking a conversational class. Logistically, I need to know how often the student would like to meet and for how long.

I have worked with a very diverse group of students over the past ten years. I have taught at six different colleges/universities and my tutoring students have included high school students.
