About Kelsey

Hello there! My name is Kelsey, can't wait to meet you! I am fairly new to teaching private lessons, I started this January 2017. I love teaching, and I am very passionate about the flute! I'm excited to share my knowledge of this instrument with students, and to help them to achieve their best sound. I achieved my minor in flute performance at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and graduated with my Bachelor's in 2012. I have personally been playing the flute for 20 years, and am able to teach students both to read music, and to improv. I perform in a duo several times a month around St. Louis and surrounding cities, specializing in flute improv and flute solos. I am a very patient, and enthusiastic person, and my teaching style is flexible and fun, focusing on attainable goals so the students can experience success. I look forward to helping you reach your musical goals!

I have always wanted to teach the flute. I started teaching an aqcuaintances daughter, and through word of mouth acquired a few other students early in 2017. I am newer to teaching, but I feel that I have the knowledge, patience, communication skills to spread the music to others.

I started playing flute when I was seven years old, and loved it immediately. I have had over a decade of private lessons myself, played in marching and concert bands, received a I in solo/ensemble 2003-2007, participated in all-district band 2003-2007, and all-state band 2007. I received a flute scholoarship to attend Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and achieved a minor degree in flute performance. Since college, I have been steadily gigging 2014-current. I have valuable experience in various aspects of auditions and performances that I can share with students.

About the lesson

The first step with a new student is always to gauge his or her current skill level, and make sure all the basic posture, ombechure, position, and set up are correct. Next, decide what details/aspects to work on in reasonable, mangeable goals. Then, pick what materials the student should learn to address the issue at hand.

I have worked with children, and adults. I have experience teaching special needs children from growing up with, and teaching my younger brother music.

We switched to Kelsey for lessons in January, and the difference in my 9-year-old beginner flute player was very noticeable. Brittany has been more motivated to practice, and has moved forward two seat-ranks in school band since starting private lessons. They get along great. I would definitely recommend Kelsey as a flute teacher, she is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the instrument.
