About Sue

FluteKeys Studio uses a highly individualized student-centered approach to flute instruction. Ms. Sue Garton’s teaching style features a broad range of techniques to motivate and nurture each individual. The students and their families! I love for the students to discover they can do things that seem hard and can achieve success comensurate with the work they invest in the process. The relationships forged between us by the process is priceless, and the benefits for the students (and me!) are life-enriching. Nothing succeeds like success, and I want to help all my students be successful.

My dad was a band director for many years. Beginning in 8th grade I helped him start his beginning flute players. I've been teaching ever since!

Twenty years of experience teaching high achieving students who even achieve first chair, audition into honors district band and orchestra, all state, area youth orchestra, Best of the Day solo, and selective flute intensives. LOVE to teach young beginners AGES 6-7 THROUGH ADULT. An award-winning method for teaching young beginners is used to motivate and nurture joy in music making. Student flute choirs are also available and encouraged to round out musicianship and enjoyment of the music making process.

Flute major at Illinois Wesleyan University with graduate hours from University of Illinois and University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Consistent continuing education through annual attendance at the National Flute Association conventions, as well as membership in the Chicago Flute Club and attending events and classes. Orchestra pit work, principal flute Belleville Philharmonic, various musicians' union gigs over the years.

About the lesson

Assess the student's current level of abiility and discover the flute playing goals of the student. Then a highly individualized approach is designed with these things in mind. Lessons are designed to motivate the student by challenging the student at the appropriate level so enrichment and success can be achieved. Positive interactions also create bonds of nurturing support. I love my students and want them to know they can achieve.

Students from 2nd grade through adult enjoy lessons at FluteKeys Studio.

Schedule a free introductory lesson with no obligation. That will enable you to gauge the personality compatibility and to see the studio. At FluteKeys, my living room has been transformed into my flute studio and parents are always welcome. We will not be cloistered upstairs in some small room.

Student recital last May, and the performance of my students in the ECIYO (local auditioned youth orchestra), as well as All State performances and Best of the Day in two high school flute rooms.

What does the student hope to achieve by taking lessons that they can't get anywhere else? What kind of ensemble and/or solo playing do they wish to do? Do they wish to audition for a specific honor or job or university music program? What kind of standards to you expect from your prospective teacher's style?
