About Allyson
I like to figure out the learning style of those I'm tutoring in order to help them in the most effective way, including visualization techniques, explanation of formulas/processes, and providing big picture perspective.
I chose my major and career path based on where my passions lie. Thus, the majority of my coursework and extended knowledge is in the environmental science realm. This makes it easier and more rewarding to help others learn and understand. In general, I truly believe knowledge is power. If I can give someone that extra needed push to become a more well-rounded and successful student, I'm happy.
During high school and early college, I volunteered in various roles teaching elementary to middle school aged children science topics. Specifically, these experiences involved education about food chains/webs, competition for natural resources, animal populations, plant life cycles and growth, and food plants/planting methods. The over-arching subjects of these topics being chemistry, biology, and math.
I don't have any formal training for tutoring, but experience helping children learn about or grow their knowledge in a given subject. I have extensive coursework experience in mathmatics, science, and social science realms specifically.

I'll ask a few basic questions about what subjects need to be addressed, and what topics within these are specifically challenging. It would be helpful to bring all course materials so that I can get an idea of what the instrructor's goals are. Following this I'm more than happy to jump right in and get to helping with either homework or studying.
Mainly elementary to middle school aged students
Be honest about what you are struggling with and don't be afraid to ask questions. In math and science there are often underlying basic concepts that impact the later and more complicated ones. If you have challenges understanding these, it is more difficult to move on.
At my previous part-time job, my manager would sometimes bring her own child who had just began elementary school into work with her. Her and I would spend time learning my coworker's names and how to spell them and sound them out from writing, or playing hide and seek. During hide and seek, I would count the beginning numbers with her to make sure she was headed in the right direction. I'm fond of this memory because her personality was so energetic and excited to learn, and I was able to make it fun for both of us.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
When thinking about concepts that you struggle with, try to remember where you first went wrong. Starting there and working your way through the topic from easier to harder ideas makes for a stronger overall understanding. Additionally, think about the ways you learn best, whether that be through writing, speaking, or visualizing/drawing pictures.

In order to save you time and money, I offer a free short 30 minute first time tutoring session. This gives me and the student ample time to get familiar with one another, and establish what topics or challenges need to be addressed the most. I'm less worried about money, and more worried about making the student feel free to ask questions and correct mistakes as needed. After the first session, I charge $15/half hour (or $30/hour) for one session a week. Or if the student needs additional help, I offer $50 for two one hour sessions per week.
