About Art

I have been teaching high school English and journalism for only two years, but I got into education after about 30 years in the corporate arena. During that time, I was involved in public relations and marketing communications. I've also have experience as an editor for a trade publication. I became a teacher because I witnessed a decline in effective communication and critical thinking skills within the companies where I worked. I wanted to do something that would help set up young people to be more effective communicators in the world.

The students I tutor can expect a rigorous academic experience coupled with something few other tutors can offer: advice on how to apply that knowledge to the real world.

Teaching is the hardest work I've ever done, but it is without a doubt the most rewarding. When a student has an "aha" moment or successfully completes a task they thought was beyond them, such as writing an essay, all of my hard work feels worth it.

I am a certified English teacher in the state of Florida. I have a bachelor's degree in technical communication and a master's degree in journalism and mass communication. Before becoming a teacher, I spent almost 30 years as a professional communicator, with expertise in both internal and external communications, public relations, publishing, and editing.

About the lesson

When working with a new student, I will typically spend our first visit learning about their specific goals, where they struggle the most, if they have a specific timeline in mind for working with me, and what the successful outcome of our work together looks like to them. From there, I will come up with a plan for what I believe will be the most effective approach for us will be in meeting their needs and timeline.

I have taught 9th and 11th-grade students.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should consider what they want to achieve with their tutoring experience. The more specific they can be the better. Goals could be increasing a letter grade in an upcoming grading period, addressing academic shortcomings identified by a previous teacher, honing a particular skill, etc.
