About Shanna
I’m a furloughed airline employee and college graduate who has returned to school to pursue a degree in avaiation. I have a 4.0 and passion for everything aviation. Help me help you, and your children, by showing them it’s fun to learn-it’s something we should never stop doing.
I first recieved my bachelor’s degree at California State University Long Beach. I majored in studio art with an emphasis in photography, and I minored in communication studies. After I graduated, I worked as a freelance photographer for a of couple years. I wanted to travel with my camera, so I pursued a career with the airlines, which is where I fell in love with aviation. I decided to pursue my flying career by returning to school to work on obtaining an AS degree in commercial flight and started taking flying lessons.
This year I earned my private pilot certificate and only have one semester left before completing my second degree. I have won numerous and extremely generous scholarships to keep me moving forward in my flight training and am now looking to be furloughed from my job for 13 months starting in October.
I will not only have the time to help students with their studies, but the enthusiasm for learning that will help them succeed. Tutoring has been on my list of things I’ve wanted to do for some time now, and being furloughed will give me the opportunity to finally do just that!
I look forward to helping your children and maybe inspiring them to take an interest in aviation along the way! Thank you for considering me.
In college I participate in study groups where I often lead the discussions and help others who are struggling. I have been the top student with the highest exam score in many of my aviation classes, and due to aviation students being high achievers, many have sought me out for help. In one class, the professor also happened to be the department chair, and after submitting my homework assignment and seeing all the detail of how I showed my work and got the answers I did, replied that I will make an excellent instructor one day. Little did he know, that was already my intention.
I am planning to become a flight instructor, where I will teach ground school lessons on such topics and theory of flight, aircraft systems and engines, weather, and more. I have had to take knowledge tests in these areas for certifications and done exceptionally well with high scores of 97 percent.
I have shown to be successful in school by completing my bachelor’s degree with a 3.72 and currently maintaining a 4.0 by receiving all A’s in all of my aviation classes. With only two classes left to complete, I am on track to obtaining my second degree with a 4.0.

I like to ask questions and get a baseline for what they already know so I am not going over things they already know. I find where they are struggling and coach them along my thought process so they can learn the crucial critical thinking skills that will help them be successful long term.
I have interacted and worked with all ages, but also, I have worked with special needs students as a teacher’s assistant in junior high and high school. My mother is an RN who works with special needs children, so I naturally followed her footsteps and was a buddy at countess special olympics.
I think it’s important to not just get the answer, but to understand the why. If you can understand WHY you got the answer you did, you can do it again with a similar but different question and be successful. Always ask why.
I just recently participated in a volunteer effort with my local chapter of women pilots, where we painted a compass rose at the Chino airport. It was fun to follow the diagram and make it the exact right proportions. It reminded me a lot of geometry, which I love since I’m a very visual learner. That is something I will always bring to my teaching. Due to my art background, I love to draw things out to really help people grasp the “why”.
