About Edie
I am an experienced tutor ready to make your writing or your child's writing shine!
My name is Edie Sussman, and I have been tutoring for years in college-level writing and study skills. I earned my B.A. in Linguistics from UC Berkeley, the #1 public university in the world, and graduated with highest honors. At Berkeley, I spent four years tutoring my college peers and studying education philosopy to become the best tutor I could be.
My experience includes many writing styles, such as SAT essays, college application essays and personal statements, term papers, research papers, literary analysis, persuasive writing, and speech writing. My tools and strategies for writing improvement can help any student, whatever their individual needs may be. I am happy to provide a consultation to assess you or your child's particular strengths and areas of improvement.
In addition, I have experience working with children ages 12-16 at an academic summer camp for high-achieving students. I am well equipped to develop any younger students' talents and help them work towards achieving their academic goals.
My tutoring rates start at $75/hour. I am happy to come to your home for tutoring visits, or to meet at a local café, library, or study space of your choice.
Email me at (concealed information) for more information or to set up an appointment.
I look forward to working with you or your student soon!
I have always wanted to be an educator. As early as my middle school years, I was participating in my school's cross-age tutoring program, tutoring local elementary school students. When I began college, my education professor approached me and said I would be the right fit for college peer tutoring. He hired me for the position, and the rest is history.
During my time as a tutor, I attended weekly training seminars on educational theory and practice. These improved my own ability to help students reach their full potential. My own personal experience also helps me teach a variety of writing styles that I myself have practiced throughout the years.

I like to spend our first meeting getting an overview of a student's goals and areas of improvement. For example, I like to start by asking each student why they want tutoring. Whether it's to become a better writer in their everyday life, or to be accepted to the college of their dreams, knowing a student's goals helps me calibrate my own methods to their needs. I also like to see a student's writing sample - either something they are currently working on writing, or something they have written in the past that they feel could have been better. That way, we can talk through that writing sample so I can assess their current skills.
I have tutored primarily college freshmen and students new to college writing. Outside of that tutoring, I have also worked at an academic summer camp for high-achieving students from ages 12-16.
Tutoring in writing is more than just having a grammar-checker or spelling tool on hand. If a writing tutor looks at your writing as a copy-editor, only fixing your mistakes, they aren't truly invested in helping you learn. A good tutor will challenge you to identify and fix your own mistakes rather than trying to fix them for you.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The most important question you should ask is, "Am I prepared to put in the work to improve?" A tutor can only push you in the right direction; no tutor can do the work of improving your writing for you. Tutoring is a two-way street, and so before you talk to a tutor about your needs, you should decide how much time and effort you are willing to dedicate to the task yourself.
