About Ida
Hello, I'm Ida, and I come from a very international background, having grown up in Finland, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya, and the UK. I have a BA in Education Studies with English and Drama (Cambridge University), MA is in Social Research Methods (University of Sussex), and I did grad school studies at the London School of Economics. I speak four languages (English, Swedish, Finnish, French, and basic Kiswahili) and have tutored children at preschool, elementary, middle, and high school level. At the London School of Economics (University of London), I was a Teaching Assistant and then Lecturer in International Development for a Bachelors course. I've also taught adults private language lessons.
I know how challenging online learning/homeschooling is at this time, and I would love to help you/your family set up a routine for your/your kids' educational needs.
I am available 2-3 days per week and would prefer an ongoing position. My family is taking COVID precautions and I would expect that we would follow them.
I've always been a natural teacher and began assisting my mother in teaching language classes to younger children when I was 16 years old. I would babysit children from the expat community and help them with their homework. At 16, I also became a camp counselor and really enjoyed leading small group study sessions.
At university, I was passionate about drama and theater as a learning tool, and used theater as a way to study street children and other children at risk. I did three research projects in Tanzania and Kenya, teaching the homeless community (all ages) participatory theater.
And finally, I have a child (who just turned 5!) whom I've been creatively teaching to be a kind human since she was born!

First, we typically speak on the phone to get an overall idea of the student's needs and expectations. We discuss scheduling and agree on our first meeting. Sometimes, the student emails me a sample of their assignments in advance.
At the first meeting, we do introductions, and the student shows me the materials that they are working with and we discuss what their goals are. I ask them leading questions to explore their learning and motivational style. We gently talk about challenges and any special needs they might have.
Then we make a plan, where I outline a few different options or approaches, and agree on where to go from there!
Preschoolers, elementary, middle and high school students, university students, and adults. Most of my students have been high performance, but I've also spent a lot of time working with children at risk who often had severe learning difficulties.
Be honest with yourself about what your learning needs and goals are, what your challenges might be, and what your availability is. Ask for a phone consultation to make sure that you are on the same page. And remember, there's NO such thing as a "stupid question"!
When the COVID19 quarantine lockdown began, I was at first terrified of how my husband, little daughter, and I would manage being cooped up at home. I'm usually very social and love to explore the city, and travel. But the three of us actually ended up really enjoying the experience! Although it was an emotional rollercoaster, it was a sweet time to slow life down, make the most of our little bubble, and have some real quality family time.

What types of assignments do I put off, or make me groan just thinking about them? What might make it feel easier for me?
