About Abigail

I have been working with students for over ten years. I love mentoring, tutoring, and teaching. My goal is to provide children and youth with options, show them the world at their level in ways they can understand, and let them know that at least one person cares for them, all in the hopes that they can make well informed decisions in their lives.

I enjoy learning from the students. Young minds are so interesting. The way they see and explain the world is fascinating to me. I really enjoy spending time with them, learning from them and guiding them.

I started in church. I saw a need to help and I took the opportunity. First it began as an organized SAT tutoring and regents prep program, then I expanded into community service and mentoring.

I am a trained mentor, through over a decade in one-on-one and group work with children and youth in New York City.

About the lesson

We have a candid conversation so that we can get to know each other. I like to learn from the student, why are they getting tutoring, how do they learn, what don't they like about needing tutoring, etc.

I have worked with students ages 5 through college age. Because my approach is more coaching than pure tutoring, I'm able to interact and help across ages and backgrounds.

Be open to meeting someone new, and allowing them to get to know you. You're not a robot and neither are they. My advise is to approach it as two people who can learn from each other. The more your teacher knows about how you learn and who you are, the more they can help you in a way that sticks, and a way that you can take over and do for yourself when no one is there to help you.

I don't know if I would call it an event but I spend last weekend with about a dozen 11-12 year olds. Five hours of mentoring and bible studies for an exam they have coming up. It was so much fun answering questions, learning about how they interpret things, and just laughing with them.
