About Neida

Hello! I’m Neida and I studied psychology and neuroscience at Yale University. I have 2 years of experience tutoring high school and college students in math, science, foreign languages, and general study skills/time management. I love that “aha!” moment of realization when someone understands a difficult concept, and I can’t wait to help you reach your own “aha!” moments!

I struggled to learn difficult concepts in high school and I sometimes felt desperate and lost because of it. It wasn't until college that I figured out how to study so that it was enjoyable and concepts actually stuck with me and I remembered them. I enjoy helping other students discover this for themselves, so that they can feel empowered to succeed in their studies.

I started teaching and tutoring when I went to college. I began by teaching elementary school students short science lessons as a fun volunteer activity. Then I realized I liked helping kids learn so I started tutoring math, science, and foreign languages to high school and college students.

Sciences: I have a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Yale. My studies focused on the neuroscience/biological side of psychology so I have taken several college level biology, chemistry, physics, and math courses.

Foreign Languages: I am bilingual in English and Spanish, and have a score of 5 on the AP Spanish Language Exam. I studied Korean at college for 2.5 years, and have a Level 3 Proficiency in TOPIK.

Tutoring Experience: I tutored college students while I was in college myself, since I worked as a peer mentor. I also tutored high school students through an afterschool program for 2 years while I was in college.

About the lesson

I like to ask them why they've come to me for help and what they would like to get out of the experience. I'll also ask them how comfortable they are with the topic/material, so we can start reviewing where they need it most. Then I like to work with them to set a plan with a timeline/goals so that we can work towards what they want to achieve.

I have worked with college and high school students.

Ask a lot of questions! Make sure that the tutor you want to work with feels comfortable with the kind of help that you're asking for and make sure you feel comfortable with the tutor's teaching style.

For my past birthday, my friend who lives very far away sent me a surprise gift in the mail. I was surprised and touched that she would go through the effort to make such a thoughtful gift, and I look back on the moment fondly.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Is there a way of going over material that helps you learn better (like hands-on doing it yourself, listening to someone explain something to you, watching videos, reading the textbook)? If you do have a preferred way of learning, make sure you tell your tutor so they can work this into their teaching.

Details

Current Pricing System: $10-20 per session if the session is 60 minutes or less, depending on the topic. If the sessions are longer than 60 minutes, $25-30 per session, depending on the topic. However, I am willing to negociate with you!
