About Joy
I am a High School Literacy Specialist, which means I am specially trained to work with those students who struggle the most. This is my tenth year teaching high school, with experience in 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade. I also spent one year as a preschool teacher, one year as a middle school teacher. While working toward my PhD, I served as an instructor at University of North Texas for one year, where I taught pre-service teachers how to teach writing.
My reason for teaching is to see students fulfill their potential, and to make themselves proud. I can work with students to help them become better readers and writers, which is the foundation for success in all the subject areas. I want to help students reach their goals, whether it be to graduate from high school, or to write extraordinary essays for college classes. Let's talk about what we can do together.

My process for working with new students is:
1. Listen. I want to hear what the parents and students feel is needed during the instructional time.
2. Assess. An important step is for me to see where my student is in both reading and writing, so I can understand the best way to help that student.
3. Set Goals. I will work with the client to set realistic goals.
4. Targeted instruction. I'll select reading texts that are appropriate for that student to work with. I will use mentor texts to model correct responses, and then work with the students to produce their own.
5. Evaluation. I will evaluate the student-produced work based off a standard rubric, and offer suggestions for next steps.
6. Repeat as needed. Learning is a never-ending process. I have a growth mindset, and I hope you do too. I want to see progress from where the student is, and once they accomplish a goal, I want to help them identify next steps to achieve their potential.
