About Corryn

I love working with students and families to help them find success and build confidence. I have fourteen years of experience as a middle school teacher and I have taught science, ELA, and social studies. I am highly qualified in the following areas: special education, elementary education, middle level science, middle level ELA, and secondary (9-12) ELA. I am a National Board Certified Teacher. I also hold various leadership positions within my school and participate in state commitees such as the Delaware Writing Project.

I love to learn myself, and I am currently enrolled in a Doctoral program, so I am always able to put myself in the "student's shoes." By building relationships with students and families, and working to anticipate needs, I am able to encourage and empower studens to do their best!

I enjoy getting to know students strenghts and helping to build on them while also providing support in areas where there are struggles. I am able to anticipate and accommodate where "problems" might arise and I love to use guided questioning techniques to help students come up with the answers themselves. I believe every child needs to hear they are a rockstar, so I use plenty of positive encouragement and I stay in tune with student behavior to know when it is time to "switch gears" during an activity.

I started teaching in Laurel, DE and moved to Lake Forest to teach science and ELA. I taught 6th grade ELA and Science before moving back to the Cape Henlopen School District in 2010. I have taught science, social studies, and I currently teach 8th grade ELA for Cape.

I have been a camp counselor and child-care provider for children birth to adolescent, so I have lots of experience with multiple age and developmental levels.

Highly Qualified Certifications:

Elementary Education, Middle Level Science, Middle Level ELA, ELA 9-12, Special Education.

I am a National Board Certified Teacher.

My undergraduate is from University of Delaware, my Masters is from Delaware State University, and I am currently enrolled in the Doctoral program at Wilmington University.

About the lesson

I schedule a meeting with the family to discuss student strengths, areas of need, and to learn about the student's interest. I try to create lessons, scenarios, and assignments that match student interests so they are motivated to work. After we meet, I plan the lesson, assignment, and feedback plan and share with the family. During the start of each session, I spend time talking with the student about non-academic topics to get them comfortable and engaged.

I have taugh in inclusion classrooms for the majority of my career, although I also teach Honors level ELA as well. In addition, I work with EL students and those with behavioral needs.

I would let the student know that the tutor is there to help and wants to provide as much assistance as possible. Lots of times, we ask questions to help OURSELVES understand your thinking so that we can provide better instruction, we are learners just like you!

I enjoy camping with my husband and two children. We love to go to the Indian River Inlet and we enjoy fishing and playing on the beach. My chlildren (8 and 6) are excited to see the bridge light up at night and we have created many special memories enjoying the outdoors together.
